The studio behind two failed Shadow of the Eternals Kickstarter campaigns is disbanding.
Precursor Games was made up of veterans from Eternal Darkness developer Silicon Knights, and Eternals was to be that game’s spiritual successor.
Part-way through its first campaign, the game was pulled from Kickstarter due to the appearance of what Precursor called “a host of a new exciting opportunities that will make the game better than we envisioned”.
However, there were concerns about the studio’s ties to the legally-embattled Silicon Knights as well as the involvement of infamous developer Dennis Dyack, and a second Kickstarter campaign was met with indifference.
Despite its second crowdfunding failure, Precursor had managed to find Shadow of the Eternals a place on Steam Greenlight.
However, over the weekend Precursor CCO Dennis Dyack announced that development on the project had come to a halt.
"It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to put the Shadow of the Eternals project on hold," wrote Dyack on the official Precursor Games forum.
"We are very happy with what we have accomplished both as a group and with the community. The community has blown us away and was the one thing that kept us going through it all – we cannot thank you enough.”
The developers would be taking a break, with a view to possibly re-uniting to finish the game, wrote Dyack.
“For those who are not aware, we all worked on this project as a labour of love and self-financed 100 per cent of everything for over a year to try to make Shadow of the Eternals a reality,” he wrote.
“Although we did not succeed on doing this, we succeeded in making many friends and starting something that we hope provided value for those involved. We have no regrets.
"Is the project dead? No, but we feel it needs a rest too.
"We have all agreed as a group that when and if the time is right we will get together and start it up again. Keep your head high everyone and remember what we have accomplished together."
