Id Software co-founder and game designer John Carmack is the new chief technology officer of Oculus VR, the company announced today.

Carmack will keep his duties at Id for now, although the legendary Wolfenstein, Doom, and Quake designer has said that his Oculus work would take priority.

“My time division is now Oculus over Id over Armadillo,” he tweeted. “Busy busy busy!”

Id said that Carmack had long been interested in the work being done at Oculus.

“The technical leadership he provides for games in development at Id Software is unaffected,” it told Penny Arcade.

Carmack was an early supporter of the Oculus Rift headset, and his high profile was instrumental in getting it widespread media exposure.

“I have fond memories of the development work that led to a lot of great things in modern gaming – the intensity of the first person experience, LAN and internet play, game mods, and so on,” said Carmack.

“Duct taping a strap and hot gluing sensors onto Palmer’s early prototype Rift and writing the code to drive it ranks right up there.

“Now is a special time. I believe that VR will have a huge impact in the coming years, but everyone working today is a pioneer,” he said.

“The paradigms that everyone will take for granted in the future are being figured out today; probably by people reading this message.

“It’s certainly not there yet. There is a lot more work to do, and there are problems we don’t even know about that will need to be solved, but I am eager to work on them. It’s going to be awesome!”

Carmack will work out of a new Oculus office in his home town of Dallas.
