Microsoft is in a position to ship between two to three times the number of next-gen consoles as Sony, says analytics firm Baird Research.

Although it lost the headline battle at E3, Microsoft's Xbox One is regaining momentum and could be better placed overall, said Baird analyst Colin Sebastian.

“Importantly, our supply chain checks suggest Microsoft may have the benefit of a 2-3x unit advantage at launch compared to Sony's PS4," said Sebastian.

He expects to see both systems run into supply shortages at launch. While shipping more units to stores might not equate to more consumer demand, if one console runs out of stock then sales of the other may benefit.

Nintendo's Wii U however will continue to struggle unless it sees a price cut, said Sebastian.

"The fate of the platform will likely rest on the popularity of Nintendo's holiday software lineup," he added.
