Gearbox is working on high-definition remakes of Homeworld and Homeworld 2, the company announced at its PAX Australia panel.

The remakes will only be available digitally on Windows PC.

In April, Gearbox announced it was the new owner of the real-time strategy franchise, for which it paid US$1.35 million (NZ$1.70 million) at the most recent THQ auction.

At the time, Gearbox chief creative officer Brian Martel said that his aim was to "preserve and assemble the purest form of the original acclaimed and beloved games with the intent of making them accessible on today's leading digital platforms". In addition, Gearbox solicited opinions on how a new Homeworld title should look and play.

The Relic Entertainment-developed Homeworld was initially released for Windows PC in 1999. Its sequel, Homeworld 2, launched for Windows PC in 2003.

A release date for the HD remakes is yet to be announced.
