The second episode of successfully Kickstarted video project Tropes vs. Women in Video Games is available to view on YouTube now.
The video was temporarily unavailable yesterday after a number of users flagged it as inappropriate.
Tropes vs Women creator Anita Sarkeesian is familiar with such a reaction, having been the target of a denial of service attack last year.
“The harassers launched a DDoS attack on my site, attempted to hack into my email and other social-media accounts, and reported my Twitter and YouTube accounts as terrorism, hate speech, or spam,” she wrote last July.
"They also attempted to distribute my personal contact info including address and phone number on various websites and forums – including hate sites.”
In her most recent video, Sarkeesian continues to discuss the trope of the damsel in distress, this time highlighting the mercy killing of women in videogames.
The aim of the 12 video series is to explore the representation of women in video games.
Last June it crushed its US$6000 Kickstarter goal, raising US$158,922 from 6,968 backers.
“This video project will explore, analyze and deconstruct some of the most common tropes and stereotypes of female characters in games,” said Sarkeesian at the time.
“The series will highlight the larger recurring patterns and conventions used within the gaming industry rather than just focusing on the worst offenders.”
