A hacker group is claiming to have created an emulator that allows copied games to be played on the Wii U.
The same group were responsible for the first Wii mod chip.
Although no proof has been presented, the hackers have described their “WiikeU” technology as an optical drive emulator that allowed games to be launched on the WIi U from a USB drive.
The emulator allegedly functions regardless of console region.
"We have now completely reversed the WiiU drive authentification, disk encryption, file system, and everything else needed for this next generation K3y,” read a statement on the group’s website.
Nintendo said it was aware of the claims, but was yet to see any evidence of a compromised console.
"Nintendo is aware that a hacking group claims to have compromised Wii U security; however, we have no reports of illegal Wii U games nor unauthorized applications playable on the system while in Wii U mode," it said.
"Nintendo continuously monitors all threats to its products' security and will use technology and will take the necessary legal steps to prevent the facilitation of piracy.”
