Torment: Tides of Numenera has surpassed Double Fine’s Broken Age Kickstarter, and still has 27 hours of fundraising remaining.
At the time of writing, Tides of Numenera has raised US$3,687,664 (AU$3,536,030) – well above its goal of US$900,000 – but there were no hard feelings from The Cave developer.
“I think it’s awesome,” Double Fine’s Tim Schafer told GamesBeat.
“I want each Kickstarter to be more and more successful because that’s just good news for the games industry.”
Double Fine VP of business development Justin Bailey agreed.
“It’s great to watch crowd funding continue to evolve into a viable platform for game financing,” he added.
“It’s exciting to think that one day AAA games may be financed in this manner, and that a modest point-and-click adventure game helped get it all started!”
The game’s funding total has meant that Planescape: Torment lead designer Chris Avellone has been able to join the inXile team in something of a floating role.
The Obsidian Entertainment co-founder would be on hand to “review and provide feedback on all creative elements of the game, including the story, characters, and gameplay areas”, according to inXile.
The bad news is that the project's now-numerous stretch goals will delay the game a few months.
“We purposely designed Torment to be modular so that, if we had additional funding, we could easily expand upon the game in ways that would make sense,” wrote inXile on the game’s Kickstarter page.
“Your support has exceeded our expectations. It is clear to us that to create as high quality a final product as we desire, and as you deserve, we’re going to want more time than we had in our original schedule.
“It’s our plan to use funds to keep the team on the project longer, allowing us to design, iterate, and polish more, to make a game that truly lives up to the Torment name.”
Torment: Tides of Numenera will be available for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC sometime in the first half of 2015.
