It looks like the Wii U will miss out on DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine as well as Epic’s Unreal Engine 4.

Last week BioWare confirmed that Dragon Age III: Inquisition and Mass Effect 4 would be powered by DICE’s Frostbite 3 engine, but that neither game would make it to the Wii U.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Battlefield series executive producer Patrick Bach said the engine simply wasn’t designed for Nintendo’s console.

“The biggest problem we have right now is we don't want to back down from what we see as our low spec machines,” he said.

“We right now don't have support for the Wii U in the Frostbite engine. The reason for that is it takes development time.

“What should we focus on to create the best possible Battlefield experience? We are now focused on PC and the current-gen platforms, and then there might be other platforms in the future that we can't talk about...”

“We could probably make a Wii U game in theory. But to make the most out of the Wii U, that's a different game because of the different peripherals. We want to utilise all the power of each console.”

Battlefield producer Tobias Dahl agreed.

“We have long experience with scalability. We've always been making PC games. But we don't want to ship different games dependent on the platform,” he said.

“We need to set the limit somewhere, to have the lowest spec for this title.”

Similarly, a game using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 could be made for Wii U, but the company believes it’s unlikely anyone will bother.

When asked at GDC if Unreal Engine 4 would work on the Wii U, Epic’s Mark Rein responded: "Hahahaha, no."

However, Rein immediately clarified his comment.

"I mean, sorry, it's not really a correct answer. We have Unreal Engine 3 for the Wii U, right?

“And Unreal Engine 3 is powering all kinds of amazing games, still lots of games are being made with Unreal Engine 3.

“Unreal Engine 3 doesn't disappear because of Unreal Engine 4. But our goal for Unreal Engine 4 console-wise is next-gen consoles.

“That's really what our energies are focused on. If you want to make a Wii U game, we have Unreal Engine 3, and it's powering some of the best games on the Wii U already.”

The following day, Rein stated that if someone wanted to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they could.

“If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen," he said.
