Tower defence title Dungeon Defenders is getting a sequel with a MOBA-like player-versus-player mode, Trendy Entertainment has announced.
Dungeon Defenders II’s competitive five-versus-five MOBA mode will launch with 24 heroes and one map available.
“Our take on the MOBA genre is more RPG-esque, with more hero customisation, persistent hero leveling, loot and a town square where players can socialise, manage their heroes, shop, trade, and queue for matches,” said Trendy.
The game will be free-to-play and like similar titles, there will be a rotating selection of free heroes to choose from, as well as boosts available for purchase that allow players to level faster.
At the current stage of development, there is a single in-game currency that players can earn or purchase to buy items and heroes in game.
Heroes, cosmetic items, and pets purchased in the competitive mode will be unlocked in the game’s co-operative mode.
Trendy’s goal was to provide the same amount of content at around the same price as the original game, it said.
Dungeon Defenders II will release in two parts. The competitive mode is in closed beta right now and taking registrations, while the cooperative mode will go into beta late 2013 or early 2014.
Development is currently focussed on Windows PC, Mac, iOS, Android, and browsers.
“Our current focus is to release Dungeon Defenders II on platforms that allow consistent updates and cross-platform play,” said Trendy.
“Because of this, we are not planning to release Dungeon Defenders II on current generation consoles.
“If the next generation consoles fit this bill, we would love to see Dungeon Defenders II released there as well.”
