Ultra-portable Android console GameStick has finished up its Kickstarter run with more than six times its US$100,000 goal.
The GameStick raised a total of US$647,658 ( AU$620,904) from 5,691 backers, sailing past its goal in a single day in the process.
The console is a USB stick-sized device which slots inside its flat, mobile phone-shaped controller for maximum portability.
It is powered by a TV's HDMI or USB port, or using an adapter.
“If you look ahead a few years we believe that the components required to run a game will sit in the controller,” said the developers. “This is why we spent so much time trying to make the computing device small enough to fit within it.”
The success of its campaign has “allowed us to validate our invention, gain confidence in the idea and with over 500% of the targeted funding it will allow us to bring you a more highly specified product than we could ever have originally hoped for,” said GameStick CEO Jasper Smith.
The project was mostly complete before hitting Kickstarter, with only final prototyping and testing stage remaining.
As a result of stretch goals being met, the console will include an SD card slot, and be available in several colours.
It will also support the use of iOS and Android mobile devices as controllers, and an optional multi-function dock accessory will be available, which allows wireless charging of the GameStick controller and adds extra storage space as well as USB ports to the device.
Although the GameStick is an open system compatible with all existing Android games, the developers have identified 200 titles that "will be great to play on GameStick", and are working with a network of over 250 developers including Madfinger, Hutch, and Disney to develop further games for the console.
The GameStick is set to launch in April of this year, and will cost US$79 (AU$75).
