Gearbox was offered the chance to develop a Call of Duty title, its CEO Randy Pitchford has revealed.
Speaking with German site KGN, Pitchford outlined why the Borderlands developer steered clear of one of gaming’s best-selling franchises.
"I don’t think there’s anything to accomplish there,” he said.
“I think if I was only in it for the money I would’ve done that."
Gearbox would have struggled to bring a unique perspective to the long-running series said Pitchford, adding that “you have to play by the rules of the series”.
“To do Call of Duty right you need to do what needs to be done, and there are a lot of people who can do that.
“For us it wouldn’t add to our credibility, it wouldn’t move us forward. There would be no significant challenge that would be gratifying to overcome."
Gearbox's next game is Aliens: Colonial Marines, which is due out February 12 on Windows PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U.
