Physical games are still the standard, but consumer preferences may be shifting to digital.

A third of game buyers who purchased a game in the past three months say that they prefer digital purchasing over receiving a physical copy, according to a report by the consumer market research firm the NPD Group.

This is a ten per cent increase on the same measure taken a year ago, suggesting that gamers are becoming more comfortable with digital-only transactions.

NPD’s survey also found that 40 per cent of those who purchased games also bought at least one game in both digital and physical formats.

The data was collected over a three month period, from 8,500 participants.
