As-yet unnamed representatives from the video game industry will meet with US Vice President Joe Biden as he investigates the causes of gun violence, Reuters is reporting.

As part of a task force set up in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre, Biden is looking at the role of violent movies and videogames in mass shootings.

The task force was set up by President Barack Obama, who asked Biden to come up with a broad range of ideas to curb gun violence.

These ideas will be revealed during Obama’s State of the Union address later this month.

As part of his investigations, Biden is also meeting with gun lobby group the National Rifle Association (NRA), with victims of gun violence, with mental health and disability advocates, and with gun safety groups, hunting groups, and gun owners.

In related news, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has called for a focus on video game violence.

"All you're focusing on right now is gun control," Christie told NBC’s Today News.

"What about the violence in our video games? You and I both have children. We don't allow those games into our house. We've made that decision because we think it desensitizes our children to the real effects of violence."

Christie also cited substance abuse, gun access, and mental health issues as factors that lead to violence.

The Republican Governor is hardly the first to call out video games following the latest mass shooting on US soil.

In December, Democrat Senator Jay Rockefeller introduced a bill that would task government agencies with researching the effects of violent games on children.

That same month, NRA VP Wayne LaPierre called gaming a “callous, corrupt, and corrupting shadow industry that sells and sows violence against own people, through vicious violent video games with names like Bulletstorm, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat, and Splatterhouse".

Finally, residents of a town called Southington in Connecticut who were planning to run a Violent Video Games Return Program where games would be exchanged for gift vouchers before being destroyed have cancelled that plan.

As Polygon reports, the scheme was nixed due to "logistical details".
