A startup by the name of Ouya is aiming to produce a US$99 (NZ$123) Android game console that you can connect to a TV, according to a post on business networking site AngelList.

Ouya aim to include a high-concept developer ecosystem within the console, allowing any developer to publish games.

Even the underlying hardware is "built to be hacked" — every customer who buys a retail box will get a dev kit in the bargain, the site claims.

All games on the console would be free to play.

Still just at the concept stage, Ouya’s console has garnered attention due to those tied to the project: Yves Behar of the One Laptop Per Child project, Muffi Ghadiali from Amazon’s Kindle team, and Ed Fries, who is often called “the father of Xbox”.
