Rockstar has announced the multiplayer mode for its upcoming third-person shooter Max Payne 3.
Called Gang Wars, Rockstar intends for its multiplayer matches to have a narrative focus. The matches on a level playlist will change based on the result of the match prior.
For example, the first round might task players with stealing a bag of cash (Capture the Flag). The winning player of that round could then have a bounty placed on his or her head.
Max Payne will explain the objective of each round in cut-scenes that tie back into the singleplayer story.
Speaking with IGN, lead multiplayer designer Charlie Bewsher said, “The narrative element of Max Payne 1 and 2, and what we’re doing with 3, is obviously very strong. o when you starting thinking about the multiplayer version of Payne I think you’ve got to address that part of the game. But there’s also a narrative unique to any multiplayer game, though – you sort of get this drama that unfolds.”
The multiplayer will also include contextually relevant “perks” such as “Sneaky”, which makes you appear as an ally to your enemies, and “Paranoia”, which makes an enemy player unable to identify friend from foe.
IGN reports that the multiplayer compnent of Max Payne 3 will be the main focus of the game’s future downloadable content.
