Review

First announced in 2005, Alan Wake is a psychological thriller five years in the making. We had our reservations, but Remedy's narrative-heavy foray has proved worth the wait.

Alan Wake 2 to be Kinect compatible?

Alan Wake developer Remedy has posted a job listing seeking a programmer with experience in motion-control technology.

The listing says that the programmer will be working on a “AAA console project” for the Xbox 360 and will be built on the “next iteration of Remedy’s unique game engine that was previously used in Alan Wake.”

Remedy has previously said they’re interested in creating a sequel to Alan Wake. The studio recently announced that no further downloadable content packs (or “episodes”) would be released for the first title.

Final Alan Wake DLC dated

Remedy has announced that the next downloadable content pack for Alan Wake, called The Writer, will be released on the 12th of October.

Developed by Remedy and published by Microsoft, the Alan Wake was initially supposed to be promoted by ongoing DLC packs, called “episodes.” In spite of being a critical success, Alan Wake underperformed at the till – in no small part as it shared a release window with Rockstar’s blockbuster, Red Dead Redemption.

To that end, The Writer will be the last DLC pack for Alan Wake. The Writer will cost 560 Microsoft Points.

Next Alan Wake DLC to be the last

Remedy boss Matias Myllrinne has said that upcoming Alan Wake downloadable content pack "The Writer" will be the last for the game.

Pre-release, both Remedy and publisher Microsoft said that Alan Wake would be backed up by ongoing DLC, which it called episodes.

Alan Wake was a critical success but, along with several other titles, was swallowed whole by Rockstar’s Q2 2010 "The Blob", Red Dead Redemption.

First Alan Wake DLC episode available

Remedy and Microsoft have released the first downloadable content pack, or “episode”, for Alan Wake.

Entitled The Signal, the DLC will set you back 560 Microsoft Points. The next DLC for Alan Wake, The Writer, has yet to be dated.

Alan Wake failed to make a significant impact at the till when it was released in May, in spite of positive reviews. You can read ours here.

Remedy: Alan Wake “has legs”

Remedy: Alan Wake “has legs”

Remedy’s Oskari Hakkinen has said that the studio’s psychological action thriller “has legs” and that its lacklustre sales are indicative of stiff competition and aggressive marketing on behalf of competing titles.

Alan Wake was released in May and shipped 145,000 units in the US, according to the NPD. Also released in May in the US was Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption and Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy 2, shipping 1.5 million and 564,000 units respectively.

“There is no doubt that Alan Wake hit the shelves during a very competitive launch window, with some games dominating with extremely aggressive marketing,” Hakkinen told vg247.

Second Alan Wake DLC named?

The downloadable content menu in Alan Wake now contains a listing for an unannounced piece of DLC entitled “The Writer.”

It reads, “Our second downloadable content pack, 'The Writer,' finds Wake in strange circumstances; now fully aware of the thing that opposes him, he must survive one increasingly nightmarish situation after another.”

The menu suggests that there are “67 days left,” making the launch date the 27th of July – the same day as the first announced DLC, “The Signal.”

Alan Wake 2 "already written"

Remedy’s Oskari Hakkinen has verified that a second “season” of Alan Wake has already been written and that the studio “knows where to take the story.”

Speaking with CVG, Hakkinen said, “We do know where season two is going to go. Season one will have a conclusive and satisfactory ending but we will leave doors open for season two and we know where we’re going to take the story.”

An episodic thriller, Alan Wake will have downloadable content that will continue season one where the retail version of the game concludes.

Alan Wake is a psychological action thriller, a unique new take in the world of gaming. The game is set in an idyllic all-American small town and its surroundings in the state of Washington. Alan Wake, the game's protagonist, is a bestselling horror writer, who writes a novel about his darkest nightmares. In the game, those nightmares come true.

The game features a massive, open world for the players to explore. The game design is mission based with the player as the driving force behind the action, and as with their previous games, Remedy again focuses completely on delivering the best possible single player experience.

Features:
  • Intense psychological thriller. “Alan Wake” delivers a deeply psychological and finely crafted plot that raises the bar for storytelling in video games. The riveting story of “Alan Wake” is propelled by a movie-like atmosphere, compelling situations, memorable characters and real-time pacing. Remedy has a record of creating and developing games with unique cinematic presentation and exceptionally high production values. The developer has harnessed next-generation gaming technology to tell a powerful story that immerses the gamer in the intense emotion and suspense of Alan Wake’s thrilling adventure.
  • Massive, open world to explore. The free-roaming elements and massive open world allow gamers to investigate the mysteries of Bright Falls and encourage them to explore and pay close attention to detail.
  • Light as a combat element. As the story progresses, nights grow longer and days grow shorter. This poses a severe problem for Alan Wake since his enemies seemingly gain strength from the shadows, and before long light itself becomes his greatest ally. Players must skillfully combine their use of light with more conventional weapons to stand a chance against these creatures of darkness.
  • Realistic, interactive environment. Set in the town of Bright Falls, the hyperdetailed environments of the Pacific Northwest play an important role; even the change in daylight and weather will profoundly affect the characters and enemies in “Alan Wake.” The game’s advanced rendering engine provides amazingly realistic environments that bring this world to detailed life - from the lush forest of evergreen trees to the quaint small-town buildings and streets. The world of “Alan Wake” is alive and real.
  • Episodic narrative. The mission-based structure of “Alan Wake” creates an episodic narrative similar to a deeply structured dramatic television series. As the episodes progress, gameplay will evolve to introduce new elements and characters, escalating the level of threat and action in the game.
