Red Faction: Guerrilla 360

Review

A worthy sequel to the original Red Faction titles, Guerrilla sports a tremendous physics engine that is capable of producing some outstanding effects. It may be lacking in story, but don't let that put you off - there's plenty of fun to be had with both singleplayer and multiplayer modes.

"Hugely entertaining."

Punters encouraged to smash car in London

To celebrate the launch of Red Faction: Guerrilla, THQ parked a car filled with over 100 copies of the game in the middle of London, chained a sledgehammer to it and left passers-by to "smash and grab" to get their hands on one.

"Because Red Faction: Guerrilla features the world's most realistic destruction engine," said THQ PR guy Simon Watts, "we thought that it would make for an interesting experiment to find out how many people, going about their everyday business, would stop in a busy city street to work out some stress by smashing their way into a car to earn a copy of the brand new game."

Hundreds of people apparently did just that. Makes you think twice about parking in London, eh?

Red Faction: Guerrilla

In many ways, it's entirely fitting that a game so determined to showcase cutting-edge destructible environments should be set on Mars.

This barren and desolate planet is the perfect backdrop to construct a world from the ground up, without having to have to worry about pesky details such as trees and rivers. Or possibly even bacteria.

The original Red Faction, launched in 2001 for PS2 and PC, bought developers Volition a considerable amount of kudos for showing just what was possible if you provided a first-person shooter with a halfway decent collapsible terrain model. It might not have been immediately obvious why some environmental objects were more collapsible than others, but the change in game dynamics afforded by such physics helped to make for some compelling multiplayer.

Set 50 years after the climactic events of the original Red Faction, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to take the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly re-established Red Faction movement as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Red Faction: Guerrilla re-defines the limits of destruction-based game-play with a huge open-world, fast-paced guerrilla-style combat, and true physics-based destruction.

Features:

  • Open World Guerrilla Warfare – You decide who, when, where and how to battle. Utilize guerrilla tactics, improvised weaponry, and modified vehicles to lead insurgent attacks on EDF targets. Launch attacks based on your own gameplay style, take on missions in any order you choose, or engage in destructive activities to weaken the EDF’s grip on Mars.
  • Strategic Destruction – Use destruction to your tactical advantage, setting ambushes or chain reaction explosions to attack enemy strongholds and permanently modify the game environment. Leverage fully-dynamic physics-based destruction to improvise on the fly: blow holes in a wall or floor to set an ambush or escape, take out a staircase to stop your pursuers, or drive vehicles through blown out walls.
  • Evolving & Emergent Gameplay – Carve your path through an ever changing landscape as you improvise your combat tactics – mixing gameplay styles, vehicles, weapons and explosives to defeat the EDF.
  • Epic Sci-Fi Setting – Explore the huge, unforgiving Martian landscape, from the desolate mining outpost of Parker to the gleaming EDF capital city of Eos; then tear through the fully destructible open-world environments swarming with EDF forces, Red Faction resistance fighters, and the downtrodden settlers caught in the cross-fire.
  • Multiplayer Combat – There is no place to hide when you put your guerrilla warfare skills to the test in a variety of highly destructive multiplayer combat modes.
