Playdead, the studio behind Limbo, has announced it has sold 1 million copies of the game, a milestone that has allowed it to regain independence by buying out early investors.

“With the success that Limbo has achieved, we felt this was the ideal time to fully regain our independence,” said studio boss Dino Patti.

“We are grateful to everyone who supported us over the past few years, and look forward to forging new partnerships that will both let us reach new heights as a studio and give our director, Arnt Jensen, room to grow creatively.”

The game is being played in 153 countries in nine languages across three platforms, PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A Mac version of Limbo is to launch later this year.

Playdead is working on a new, unannounced title.
