UPDATE: A report that the importion of Mortal Kombat could result in fines of up to AU$110,000, first reported by Gamespot Australia and widely disseminated across the Internet, are inaccurate.

This fine applies to those attempting to import 25 or more copies of Mortal Kombat for the purposes of selling, hiring, trading, distributing or exhibiting the game.

ORIGINAL: The Australian Classification Board has taken new action regarding Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment’s upcoming game, Mortal Kombat, a title it has refused to classify.

Yesterday afternoon, the Board blacklisted Mortal Kombat meaning those caught trying to import the game can face fines of up to AU$110,000.

Until now, the game had only been refused classification, meaning it was illegal to sell the game in Australia, but not illegal to own.

Gamespot AU spoke with an Australian Customs official who explained, “As Mortal Kombat has been refused classification in Australia, it is considered objectionable material. It is therefore a prohibited good and illegal to import into Australia.”

“This includes games purchased over the Internet from foreign websites.”
