The former lead singer and guitarist of Nirvana will be featured as a playable character, performing two of the band's hit singles from their 1991 album Nevermind: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and a special, previously unreleased live recording of "Lithium."

Johnny Cash will makes his video game début as a playable character in Guitar Hero 5. Cash’s virtual image will live on as Guitar Hero players can rock out on any instrument controller to “Ring Of Fire,” and unlock the ability to strum and sing along as the “Man in Black” himself in the new Electric Honky Tonk Bar venue.

Guitar Hero fans will soon be able to take centre stage and become the rockstar of the show by playing in-game as their own Xbox Avatars in Guitar Hero 5.

When fans take home Guitar Hero 5 on September 1, they’ll be able to import their Avatars, choose their instrument and play along with their personalized characters rocking out to any track on the 85-song set list.

Taking full advantage of the latest technology available from Xbox LIVE, gamers can choose their band mates and mix and match their Xbox Avatars with Guitar Hero favourites like Judy Nails, Axel Steel and Lars Ümlaüt, or even rip it up alongside in-game talent. Xbox Avatars will also get a Guitar Hero makeover in the game’s Create-A-Rocker mode, where players can further customize their creations with exclusive Guitar Hero clothing and accessories to ensure they look performance-ready.

Final Guitar Hero 5 set list announced

Activision have now released the full track listing for Guitar Hero 5, which is due to be released in New Zealand on September 18 for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii and PS2.

Guitar Hero 5 will have the entire set list is at players' finger tips from the start, and you'll be able to play with any in-game instrument combination - multiple vocalists, guitarists, bassists and drummers, in any game mode.

Carlos Santana gets Guitar Hero 5 gig

Activision have announced today that Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and 11-time Grammy Award winner Carlos Santana is set to appear as an exclusive in-game artist in the upcoming Guitar Hero 5.

Santana’s accomplishments span four decades and more than 40 albums including the self-titled album, Santana, that launched one of the most recognizable Latin-infused classic rock anthems, “No One to Depend On.” The live version of the song will be featured in Guitar Hero 5 with Carlos Santana jamming on stage as a playable character.

“We’re thrilled to showcase one of the top guitarists of all time in Guitar Hero 5 and offer fans the opportunity to experience Carlos Santana’s signature sounds and iconic likeness first-hand,” said Tim Riley, Vice President of Music Affairs for Guitar Hero. “His accomplished career and breadth of musical style are a great illustration of the variety of rock experiences we have included in the game and we are excited to announce him as the first of five playable in-game artists.”

Guitar Hero 5 drums revealed

Activision have released new images of the updated Guitar Hero 5 drum kit. Modifications include the relocation of the controls to the front centre, and the extension of the cymbal pads which now form a complete circle.

No further information regarding pricing is available at this time, however the game is still on track for a 18 September release in New Zealand. Head over to the official site for more information.
