Today, Ubisoft announced a unique partnership with Charles River Media, a North American publisher of video game development books. Both companies are working together to create one of the first game design books written by gamers for gamers.

"Designing Wargames: The Official Far Cry 2 Map Editing Guide" will be published in the autumn of 2009. Written and edited by David Hutchison, author of “Playing to Learn: Video Games in the Classroom,” the book will comprise of map making techniques and advice contributed by Far Cry 2 map makers around the world.

"This is the next milestone in gamer-generated content," says David Hutchison, Associate Professor at Brock University. "Far Cry 2 makes it easy for both PC and console gamers to create cool new multiplayer maps that they can then share with other gamers. We want to honour this effort by inviting the Far Cry 2 map-making community to contribute to this first-of-its-kind game design book."

Ubisoft has announced that they will release new downloadable content for Far Cry 2 before the end of the month.

The Fortune’s Pack DLC will bring new vehicles and new weapons to both the single-player game and the multiplayer game, giving gamers even more diverse means of destruction.

Ubisoft have today released a bunch of new Far Cry 2 trailers ahead of the game launch later next month.

In Far Cry 2, you are a gun for hire, trapped in a war-torn African state, stricken with malaria and forced to make deals with corrupt warlords on both sides of the conflict in order to make this country your home.

 

When it was released back in 2004, the original Far Cry was ground breaking in many respects.

It marked the debut of the CryEngine, a purpose-built graphical engine designed to push the limits of the available hardware by offering staggeringly deep draw distances, extensive pixel shader use and (eventually) support for Shader Model 3.0. Due to the setting of a lush tropical island, most people will remember Far Cry for the level of complexity provided to the water and vegetation effects. Although the storyline was dark and complex, it generally took a back seat to the eye candy.
