Destiny is the most pre-ordered new IP in history, says publisher Activision.
As such, the company said it expects the game to be one of the biggest entertainment launches of the year.
“We feel that we have the opportunity to launch something huge,” said Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.
“Not just into the gaming landscape, but [into] the pop cultural landscape. Arriving at our launch day with this much support and enthusiasm from fans and retailers is downright exciting. Moments like this just don’t come around very often.
“Destiny has been a labour of love and a remarkable creative journey for everyone at Activision and Bungie.”
Destiny launched at midnight last night for both critics and the general public, with developer Bungie stressing that this was so the full game experience could be had by all.
“Without a vibrant population for the last safe city on Earth and Guardians roaming the wild frontiers, Destiny is a shadow of what it should be” said community manager David Dague.
“That’s not how we wanted to submit for review.”
Bungie also warned those undecided on the game about early reviews.
“We fully anticipate seeing day one reviews from folks who decide to kick the tires,” said Dague, “but don’t have the time or patience to take our ride for a nice, long road trip.”
Our Destiny review will be up on Monday.
