Guitar Hero Live's free rotation gets 28 new tracks this week

There will soon be more than 300 playable tracks available in Guitar Hero Live.

Tomorrow, another 28 tracks will be added to the game’s GHTV mode, which is two channels of constantly rotating songs that all players can access for free.

As well as jamming along with each channel, players can queue up specific songs from the GHTV library by spending in-game currency or real world money.

[i]Guitar Hero Live[/i] takes some chances and is a better game for it. The campaign and local multiplayer offerings are pretty weak, but GHTV's rotating channels are addictive. It's a shame the game's extra songs aren't available as DLC.

It’s widely accepted that the briefly-inescapable guitar game genre collapsed under the weight of a zillion stagnant sequels, expansions, and spin-offs – that corporate greed killed the rhythm peripheral star. But it’s been decades in video game years since Warriors of Rock shuffled onstage, and so a whole new generation has grown up not knowing how great it feels to nail a behind-the-head solo on a plastic guitar in front of its parents.

Sounds like it’s time to get the band back together and show these whipper-snappers the true meaning of ‘cock out’, said someone at Activision, probably. And so we have Guitar Hero Live – it’s like the other ones, but for the Spotify set!

To be fair to Activision, Guitar Hero Live isn’t a rehash of old classics by a bunch of saggy balding dudes. Or it isn’t only that, at least. Rather, Live shakes things up by presenting its action in first-person, and by swapping cartoony crowds for footage of actual human beings rocking moderately. Oh, and this time the plastic guitar has two rows of three buttons rather than five in a single row, because money?

Q: After Warriors of Rock, Vicarious Visions was supposed to get a shot at Guitar Hero, and apparently worked on a game for a year before it was scrapped. How did FreeStyle Games wind up getting a shot at the franchise?

James Norris: I can’t personally speak to how Activision approached them – I think that happened before I was asked to come on board – but I know that I was back in the States working at another developer, and I got a call from Jamie Jackson. He said, ‘Hey, do you wanna come out here and help make a new Guitar Hero with me?’ I was overjoyed and said ‘Yes, sign me up!’ So I moved from Venice Beach, California up to Royal Leamington Spa, England, and I’ve been working on it ever since.

Q: Activision is largely blamed for killing rhythm games by releasing a bazillion Guitar Hero games and saturating the market. Why are we seeing a new Guitar Hero now?

The first 24 tracks of Guitar Hero Live’s setlist have been revealed by Rolling Stone.

"This is something we gave a load of thought to,” developer FreeStyle's creative director and studio head Jamie Jackson said.

“Guitar Hero – by its name alone – has always been associated with classic rock tracks. And we know fans really love that type of music. So we wanted to make sure those fans weren't disappointed.

Guitar Hero is returning to consoles this year with a new look and a new peripheral.

Guitar Hero Live is coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, and mobile, and will be US$100 including a controller.

The mobile app will offer the same experience as consoles, with the controller connecting via Bluetooth.
