The Wii U port of Project Cars has been cancelled due to technical limitations.

Slightly Mad Studios' creative director Andy Tudor issued a short statement explaining the hyper-realistic car sim's Wii U cancellation.

"We will no longer be actively pursuing development on [Project Cars for Wii U] as the quality does not meet our own high standards nor our intended vision for the title on this platform," said Tudor.

Crowdfunded racer Project Cars may not make it onto the Wii U after all.

UK developer Slightly Mad Studios has admitted it is struggling to get the game running well on Nintendo's console, and that it is hoping the Japanese company will announce new hardware at this year’s E3.

"At the moment we're running at about 23fps [at 720p] on the Wii U," studio boss Ian Bell said on the game's official forums.

Project CARS developer Slightly Mad Studios has promised to release free cars for the game every month.

After multiple delays, the studio promised players free cars to players on the day the game is released. Now, Slightly Mad has expanded that offer, saying new cars will regularly be available.

The first such car is the Lykan Hypersport, a Middle-Eastern super car which features in the movie Furious 7, and which will be available in Project CARS come May.

The publisher said the game’s release has been pushed back so further polish can be applied, but also to give it a release date that “allows the game the greatest chance of success and visibility”.

Slightly Mad Studios has released a handful of screenshots for upcoming racing sim Project CARS.

According to Slightly Mad creative director Andy Tudor, all screenshots were taken simply by pausing the game and taking a screenshot.

“No special modes or dev team-only features or downscaling from some huge resolution – just the same functionality that you the players will be have too,” he wrote on PlayStation Blog.
