Remedy to remedy Quantum Break's broken PC version

Remedy Entertainment has acknowledged the myriad of issues Quantum Break has on PC, promising fixes for at least some of the bugs.

The PC version has seen many issues since its April 5th launch, when the action game became the "best-selling new franchise or IP" in Microsoft Studios' history.

The biggest issue mentioned in Remedy's to-do list is frame stuttering, which Remedy says is thanks to "a major rounding error introduced into [its] refresh rate predictions on shipping."

Wearing spandex and feeling silly: Shawn Ashmore talks Quantum Break

Q: What was your reaction to finding out you would be a video game character?

Shawn Ashmore: It was pretty intense honestly. I was excited, you know? I am a gamer, I grew up playing games so the fact that I get to be a part of a video game at this point and not just part of the game but the actual playable character, that made it pretty incredible. And it was a strange process. I’d never done motion capture before, and having your whole self digitally captured and scanned is a bizarre process. Now that I’ve actually finished the game and got to play through it, it’s so incredible.

Q: Yeah I imagine playing as yourself is pretty sweet.

Remedy gives Quantum Break pirates an eyepatch

Quantum Break protagonist Jack Joyce appears with a pirate's eyepatch if you run a pirated copy of the time-bending action title.

Reddit and/or NeoGAF made the discovery, but not because a cracked version is available (it uses apparently uncrackable Denuvo protection), but instead because the eyepatch Easter Egg is triggered if you start the game after logging out of the Windows Store.

According to the game’s Windows 10 Store page FAQ, if Jack looks like a pirate, the DRM might've accidentally triggered, and you simply need restart the game.

Quantum Break review

Quantum Break is magnificent, pushing the boundaries of what's possible both technically and from a narrative perspective.

When Remedy announced its follow up to Alan Wake was going to include a TV show, many – including me – grimaced at the thought. We shouldn’t have, we should have been ecstatic; the gaming industry needs developers like Remedy to focus on advancing narratives in games. If any studio was going to make FMV integration work, it was those crazy Fins, and hot damn have they done it.

Quantum Break is not a game that just relies on one narrative tool to create its story, but rather implements a multitude of the most successful and previously unsuccessful tools into one incredible package. FMV, cinematics, choice-based systems – you name it, Remedy has integrated some aspect of it into Quantum Break and taken every single one to a whole new level. The result is one of the most immersive and developed narratives that gaming has ever seen, one that has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for storytelling in the medium.

Remedy explains Quantum Break's 720p XO resolution

Remedy has responded to gamer criticism over Quantum Break's 720p resolution on Xbox One.

In a statement to Inquisitr, the studio clarified that "Quantum Break's 1080p output is a temporal reconstruction from four previous 720p 4xMSAA frames."

"This approach gets us high pixel quality in combination with complex shading and effects, allowing us to achieve a cinematic look. However, varying sample counts between passes and temporal upscaling makes talking about resolution, as it is traditionally understood, complicated in the case of Quantum Break."

Hands-on with time-smashing actioner Quantum Break

“To be very blunt, Alan Wake was not a big enough success.” That’s Remedy head of PR Thomas Puha explaining why we are at a preview event for sci-fi thriller Quantum Break rather than one for a sequel to Remedy’s now-beloved psychological horror title.

“It became a success in the long run, [but] it was a slow burner,” Puha adds, and Alan Wake publisher Microsoft wasn’t keen for an immediate return to Bright Falls. Instead, it wanted to explore a new property it knew Remedy was working on – the game that would eventually take shape as Quantum Break.

That was 2011, and Redmond’s plans for the Xbox One were much different than they are today (remember Xbox Entertainment Studios?) The company wanted TV-style media on its upcoming console, and idea of live action content pitched as part of Alan Wake 2 was expanded and carried over to Quantum Break.

Remedy's Quantum Break includes a trailer for a live-action series based on Alan Wake, Polygon reports.

In the game's early stages, the player explores a university featuring a chalkboard filled with notes about Remedy's previous game's protagonist, but the reference gets curiouser when the player interacts with a television in a nearby location.

The television displays a trailer for a live-action Alan Wake adaptation, entitled Return, which stars a pair of detectives (one played by Remedy creative director Sam Lake) investigating a missing Alan Wake even as he investigates them.

The Windows version of Quantum Break will not be available on Steam, according to Xbox marketing head Aaron Greenberg.

“At its heart, the gameplay needs to be good,” Hakkinen said. “How the game feels; how it plays; do you get a rush of adrenaline when you press the trigger and dodge for cover?
