The proximity of Grand Theft Auto V's release won’t affect Saints Row 4 sales, because the games are very different, says Volition.

However, Volition producer Jim Boone told Eurogamer that his studio was still cognisant of Rockstar’s looming giant.

"Yeah, it's a big one, and we talk about it a lot," he said.

"Obviously when they announced their date and it was so close to us - that was an interesting phenomenon.

“But honestly, the way that we tend to look at it is that here's this huge game that's coming out at the same time and it's going to sell a tonne. We know that, and it's unfortunate from that standpoint.”

However, the closeness of the two games’ release dates (Saints Row 4 is due out on August 23, while Grand Theft Auto V is slated for a September 17 release) wasn’t causing the kind of panic you’d expect, added Boone.

"The thing we feel good about in general is that we're such a different game to what they are,” he said.

“If we were stylistically similar to the first Saints Row, I'd be horrified right now.

Saints Row the Third came out the same time as Assassin's Creed, but the games are so different in terms of what they do.

"The genre's matured enough where you can have all these different styles and still be an open world game and be different. So I look at GTA 5 and think there's this massive game coming out, but I don't think with our superpowers and alien invasions that no-one will be comparing us to them."

Boone also outlined the fate of Saints Row The Third’s Enter The Dominatrix expansion, which was to be incorporated into Saints Row 4.

Long story short, it’s still DLC.

"It was a very interesting process just doing the expansion pack, and the team came up with a lot of very good ideas," said Boone.

"But one of the things that we've often talked about is we didn't feel like we had enough time to take the features we were doing and really blow them out the way we'd want to.

"Ultimately, we were able to bring those elements to the full game, and it ended up really well."

"We still liked what we were doing with Enter the Dominatrix, and we're planning on doing a director's cut for that as a DLC pack," said Boone. "So that will still see the light of day in a fairly modified way. It'll probably be released as Saints Row 4: Enter the Dominatrix, just from a marketing perspective."

Meanwhile, the game’s creative director Steve Jaros has told Destructoid that Saints Row 4 has much more content than its predecessor.

"Size wise, the main story mission is about the same length," he said.

"Open world content? F*ck ton more. Way more, it's absurd. When you ask me what do you say to fans who are worried about there not being enough content on the disc, I say you're not ready. You have no idea.”

Saints Row 4 is coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on August 23.
