Aliens: Colonial Marines is the canonical sequel to James Cameron's Aliens film, according to Gearbox.
Speaking at New York Comic-Con, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford explained that the game slotted between Aliens and the ill-received Alien 3.
“There was some story you felt was supposed to happen after [Aliens], and Aliens 3 was not it,” he said.
“Once we knew that universe is larger and there were colonial marines, we wished for a bigger, wider experience. We never got that.”
However, the game would allow players to have that experience, said Pitchford.
"In a video game we can live the fantasy of being one of these guys and living in this situation, filling the gap in the story that should have been filled after Aliens."
Exclusive Comic-Con footage from the game showed soldiers on LV-426, sifting through the wreckage left by the explosion that took place at the end of Aliens. Bishop features in the game, and Newt is mentioned in an audiolog near the beginning.
Colonial Marines is due out on Feb 13 on Windows PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
