DmC (Devil May Cry) GamesCom trailer

Set against a contemporary backdrop, DmC will depict a duplicitous world where nothing is ever as it seems and the line between good and evil is constantly blurred. Spurred into action by the promises of a trusted relation, Dante bursts into this world intent on revenge at any cost. DmC will retain the series' signature mix of sword and gunplay but add additional weapons, all new powers and a revitalised gameplay system.

Ninja Theory: New DmC Dante is cool

At the Tokyo Game Show last week, Ninja Theory and Capcom announced a new Devil May Cry and showed off a redesigned Dante. The lead character’s new look has been met with derision by many longstanding fans of the series.

Today, Ninja Theory boss Tameem Antoniades has sought to give those gamers a lesson on “cool.”

Speaking with 1UP, Antoniades said that the essence of Devil May Cry is “all about cool.”

“But, you know, what was cool 12 years ago – I think that was when the first game came out – isn’t cool any more.

“If Dante, dressed as he was [left], walked into any bar outside of Tokyo, he’d get laughed out.

DMC creator Kamiya pans new version

Devil May Cry Creator Hideki Kamiya is derisive of the Devil May Cry reboot under construction at Western studio Ninja Theory.

In response to a tweet seeking his opinion on Ninja Theory’s work thus far, Kamiya, who led development of the series at Capcom, replied, “Whatever.”

Of particular contention among gamers is the redesigning of protagonist Dante. The new look Dante “pulls inspiration from today’s rebellious youth,” says Ninja Theory's Tameen Antoniades.
