THQ and Vigil Games’ apocalyptic action game Darksiders is being remastered for new-gen consoles and PC.

Dubbed Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, the remaster will have its graphical features bumped up for increased performance on new consoles.

Running at 60fps on PS4 and Xbox One (and 30fps on Wii U), it doubles the texture resolution and adds improved shadow and post-processing effects over the previous-gen version.

It's somewhat surprising that these epic characters in the war between Heaven and Hell have not been turned into a game franchise previously. Fortunately however, developers Vigil Games have now taken the characters and environments by the horns, and let their fantasies run wild, much to the benefit of gamers around the world. Darksiders is an all-new title following in the enormous footsteps of games such as God Of War, as well as drawing inspiration from the legendary Zelda series too. This combination alone piqued our interest, and we were very excited to find out what Darksiders had to offer.

Darksiders has you taking the role of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. In the early stages of the game, War comes out of the underworld to find the Apocalypse has taken place before it should have and mankind has been destroyed. Due to this rather monumental mistake, War has been stripped of his former power, as he is the prime suspect.

As development studios the world over suddenly tried to look very important to their publishers by reminding them of all the important gaming franchises they had ownership of, we saw a string of sequels and prequels designed to act as steady, reliable sources of income for an industry not quite as immune to global concerns as perhaps thought. It's easy enough to repackage up a general theme and resell it the second or third time around, provided you don't screw up the basics and can retain your fanbase, chances are you'll at least break even. It's a whole other challenge to create something from scratch.

Darksiders: Wrath of War is a mythological, supernatural action fighting game (with RPG attributes) that follows the story of War, one of the supposed four horsemen of the apocalypse. At the beginning of the narrative, what starts as an otherwise pretty lethal meteor shower on earth steadily becomes worse, as hordes of demons and angels appear in a prelude to the supposed "end of days". As one of the principal combatants, War is swiftly blamed for prematurely kicking it all off. This, understandably, makes him pretty angry, and an angry supernatural entity is hardly much fun at the best of times.

You play as War - one of the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The game starts off with the beginning of the Apocalypse, where War goes about dooming all of mankind. Suddenly, War is pulled in front of some divine neutral council that says "NO! You are doing it wrong!", to which War asks for a chance to track down his fellow horse-riding associates in order to set up the story.

So the council sends War back down to the planet a hundred years after its destruction. The demons won the war, by the way, but there are still some angels stranded on earth that will try to kill you too. War isn't very good at making friends, it seems. The council also sends some creature called The Watcher with you, and he'll basically follow you around, although he does have the power to kill War if he steps out of line. The awesome Mark Hamill voices him, and therefore he sounds a little bit like Batman's Arkham Asylum-inspired Joker from time to time, but there's no problem, it still totally works.

Darksiders: Wrath of War begins as the world ends. You play as "War" - the beefy Horseman of the Apocalypse - and we got our grubby little hands on Vigil Games’ action platformer. All isn’t death and destruction for our Horseman, however. After a brief go at a fully powered War, things grind to a halt. He’s implicated in some sort of false Apocalypse plot, and War gets sent back to find the truth - or else. Minus his powers, of course.

Although the game is still in its early build stages, Vigil emphasized character control and movement first. Whilst War is a big hulking brute of an er ... "corporeal entity of the apocalypse", he has great agility, can double jump, pull off cool looking dodges, perform light/heavy attack combinations, perform air attacks, and grapple. Vigil Games called War the ultimate hybrid of a barbarian and ninja.
