Hackers stand trial for stealing millions' worth of FIFA coins

A group of hackers will stand trial today for wire fraud associated with Electronic Arts' FIFA series, thanks to an FBI investigation.

The case alleges that Anthony Clark and his co-defendants extracted between US$15 million and $18 million from the scheme, which centred around the game's controversial in-game currency FIFA Coins.

FIFA coins are used to purchase player packs, and can be earned via gameplay or by purchasing them with real money.

With its extensive licenses, bold and complex yet accessible gameplay, unparalleled online offerings, excellent tutorials, and clean presentation, [i]FIFA 14[/i] may only be a small step up from last year's game, but it remains a fantastic offering overall.

FIFA 14 is the encapsulation of annual game franchises in general: it’s the best game of the series so far, and there are improvements on last year’s effort, but nothing is particularly ground-breaking. That makes it an easy recommendation for newcomers, however it is still worthwhile even for those that own FIFA 13, because so many hours can be sunk into the game.

This year's first improvement is obvious the moment the game starts. An overhauled, tiled UI makes a good first impression and a drastic difference in menu-heavy modes such as Ultimate Team. In-game, what sticks out is a slightly slower pace. This is thanks to a new shielding mechanic that gives stronger players an advantage on the ball, but also something EA is calling Precision Movement.

Body shielding – previously only available from standstill and using multiple buttons – is now possible regardless of player velocity by simply holding the left trigger, and proves equally useful when wanting to protect the ball on both offense and defence. Precision Movement is FIFA’s new locomotion animation system, and it has players shift their weight in a far more realistic manner, and alter their stride fluidly while moving.

EA Australia FIFA 14 video causes confusion

A new promotional video released by EA Australia to celebrate the release of FIFA 14 has left viewers confused and displeased.

In it, Australian footballer Tim Cahill watches a group of women in ‘80s aerobics outfits as they perform a series of exercises, and speak in colloquial clichés such as “bonza” and “ripper”.

At the time of writing, the video has been watched more than 54,000 times on YouTube, and the public response has been overwhelmingly negative.

FIFA 14 on handheld is just a reskinned FIFA 13

FIFA 14 on the 3DS is FIFA 13 with updated rosters and kits, Nintendo admits.

"FIFA 14 Legacy Edition delivers unmatched authenticity that reflects the current football season with updated kits and rosters but no updates to gameplay or game modes," the company said in a press release.

Despite that news, the game will still be sold at full price – US$39.99.
