Xbox 360 Winter Warm-up Wars

Gameplanet scored an invite to the Winter Warm-up Wars at the RVB Interactive Entertainment Centre on Auckland's picturesque K Road last night! Aylon, GP's dedicated follower of all things gaming-related, popped in to see what the fuss was all about...

War… it never changes…

Microsoft Console Wars however, they change often. Or at least the choices of games do!

Last night Microsoft had their Winter Console Wars night at RVB on K Rd in Auckland. There was a decent selection of games for the night ranging from typical Halo 3, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Hero, Ninja Gaiden II and even some Poker (not a 360 game). There was also one extremely pleasant surprise in a preview build of Too Human which I spent a good 45 minutes with.

Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack announced + Win 1500 MS points!

Microsoft today announced the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack will arrive on 15th April exclusively for the Xbox Live Marketplace.

For a mere 800 MS Points, you will be able to participate in three new environments: Ghost Town, Avalanche, and one map yet to be revealed. With the addition of some exciting Forge options, fans can explore new ways to create and share their custom Halo 3 content.

Ghost Town is a battle-scarred maze of narrow passages and dangerous ruins outside the once-prosperous city of Voi. Collapsed ceilings and shell-battered buildings provide both valuable cover and deadly traps, as catwalks and stairways take the fight from claustrophobic ground combat to dizzying rooftop battles. Ghost Town is a mid-sized map ideal for Team Slayer games and smaller, objective types.

Halo 3 review

So, how do you start the review for the most anticipated video game in history? To be honest, I have no idea. What I do know is, I (hopefully) won’t mention too much in the way of spoilers for the single-player campaign. Because lets face it, most of you have played the game already, so why ruin it for those that haven’t?

We all know Halo 3 is the second sequel to Bungie’s hit game Halo: Combat Evolved. We also all know that we play the role of Spartan-117: Military Rank Master Chief, Earth's last hope against the Covenant onslaught.

So I might start with the improvements over the first two games. The first noticeable improvement is in the AI. The AI in Halo 3 is now more intelligent, and less artificial than the previous two offerings. The first time I picked up on the AI being improved was quite early on in the game: you get into a M12 LRV, or Warthog as we know it. After getting in the driver's seat, you make your way to an exit. As you are ready to get out and activate the door, one of your fellow Marines calls out, "I’ll get the door for ya." In the previous games this was unheard of; your allies had all the pro-activeness of a surly teenager.

Halo 3

Halo 3 is a game that demands attention from the get go, brings players into a new level of competitive gameplay and lives up to every bit of advertising and ranting you've been hearing for the last six months. Gameplanet was treated to an early hands on look at the new addition to the Halo series this week, sporting all kinds of new features and options tailored to the varied types of Halo gamers; it really is a game with something for everyone.

The campaign picks up right where Halo 2 left off, and moves along at a snappy enjoyable pace though its beautiful environments. The new control mapping is much the same as Halo 2 but is more suited to the new 360 controller with its left and right bumpers. Any gamer will settle right into the new rhythm nicely. Halo 3's appearance is obviously a huge step up from Halo 2 - being built for the 360 really puts all of that increased grunt to work, with incredible detail put into the new motion animations, textures and facial expressions.

The AI as well is an impressive leap: sometimes you really do struggle to pin down those covenant troops who are using all of the new toys just as well as you are. The campaign itself is truly hard to pull yourself away from, so plan some days off work... you will need them.
