Everything about it smacked of milking a successful franchise, of propping what might otherwise be a lacklustre quarterly financial report for publisher Ubisoft. Small wonder it was written off long ago by some specialist media as Assassin’s Creed 2.5, and smaller wonder that the publisher focused as much of the pre-release coverage as it could on what was touted as the game’s most noteworthy addition: Multiplayer.

Dyed in the wool naysayers will feel vindicated in one regard at least: Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is an extremely familiar experience. Ezio’s character doesn’t develop in any consequential way and there’s a woeful lack of intrigue to the historical plot.

The news comes via an investor’s call in which CEO Yves Gillemot said, “There will be something around Assassin's [next year]. That's all we can say," (via Eurogamer).

As to the game’s content, CFO Alain Martinez said nothing would be discussed before the new year: “Maybe after Christmas in January we'll be able to talk about what kind of product we have.”

After time with the beta, and the LAN demo at Armageddon this weekend past, it's clear that Ubisoft have done it justice.

The Armageddon demo was the same one previously shown at E3, and the beta has some new features and a slightly cleaner interface. The biggest difference visually is that the button prompts are now colour-coded, which will be important to players with Standard Definition TVs.

The beta will include nine characters across two maps, Rome and Castle Gandolfo – we can already hear the jokes.

Starting in September, the beta will be exclusive to PlayStation 3, and only available to those who pre-order the game.

Ubisoft has also announced three editions of Assassin's Creed for all platforms - PlayStation 3, PC and Xbox 360. In addition to the standard edition, there are two collector's editions, the Auditore Edition and the Limited Codex Edition. We're told the Limited Codex Edition is exclusive to EB Games.

Set immediately after the events in Assassin’s Creed 2, Ezio has returned to his village, Monteriggioni, with Caterina Sforza. Now a Master Assassin, his respite is interrupted as a cannon ball sails into his bedroom.

Ezio rushes to the ramparts on horseback – finally, horses are ridable in cities. Upon ascending the walls, Ezio discovers a truly vast army led by the Borgia family besieges his town. Using the cannon, Ezio must destroy siege towers and the opposing cannons.

In Brotherhood, Ezio will return as a legendary Master Assassin and travel to Rome where he’ll continue his shadowy battle with the Templar Order. Now, he’ll lead his brothers in battle and they’ll have to work together to defeat their enemy.

As previously suggested Brotherhood will also introduce multiplayer to the series. Using Abstergo, players will be able to help the Templar Order by training in assassination techniques – adapted to fit their own weapons and styles – before taking the fight online in a variety of game modes.
