Fallout 3 is now legal in Germany after 7 years

Fallout 3 has been unbanned in Germany after 7 years of being effectively illegal.

The game was first added to the Federal Department for Media Harmful To Minors' ban list in 2009, outlawing the sale of the game in Germany for 10 years.

According to IGN Germany, Bethesda underwent "a difficult and rarely-successful trial" to have the game removed from the list early.

Fallout 3 editing tools to be released

Bethesda Softworks today announced plans to make both its editor and downloadable content available for Fallout 3 in the coming weeks.

The official editor for Fallout 3, called the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), will be available for free download in December and will allow Games for Windows users to create and add their own content to the game. In addition, the first official downloadable content, Operation: Anchorage, will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360 and Games for Windows in January, and more downloadable content coming in February and March.

“We’ve always seen the original world of Fallout 3 as a foundation for even more content. Some created by us, and a lot more created by users,” said Todd Howard, game director for Fallout 3. “It’s fun to create your own character, but it can be equally fun to create your own adventures. We can’t wait to see what the community does with the G.E.C.K.”

Fallout 3 review

When rating a game, we have to look at many things; technical achievement, fun, story, graphics, sound, art and many other things that I cannot even think of words for.

A game like Fallout 3 is tricky, because there's so much about it that is great, and yet I still have this nagging feeling like something wasn't quite right; that something is missing.

Being the third game in a cult classic franchise (one that started in 1996) Bethesda had its work cut out for it, as they had a lot of people to please as well as trying to capture the attention of newer gamers who aren't familiar with the Fallout world. While they've abandoned a lot of the gameplay elements of the original two games, make no mistake - this is still Fallout. In spirit, anyway.

Fallout 3 won't use "draconian DRM schemes"

In recent weeks there's been significant uproar amongst PC gamers about a current flavour of DRM on recent key titles, such as Spore and Crysis Warhead, where the customer is only given a finite number of activations per copy. Naturally there were concerns of whether or not other eagerly-awaited titles would carry similar DRM implementations, such as Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 3.

PC fans waiting for Fallout 3 can breath a sign of relief. In a recent interview with Shacknews, Peter Hines, Bethesda's Vice President of Public Relations, was asked about which kind of copy protection Fallout 3 would carry;

Aussies ban Fallout 3

The Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification have handed Bethesda's Fallout 3 an "RC" rating, effectively making it illegal to sell the game in Australia.

There has been no clarification as to exactly why the game failed to achieve an MA15+ rating, currently the most restricted rating that can be applied to video games in Australia as unlike New Zealand they lack an R16 or R18 designation.

Fortunately we have learned that the full version of Fallout 3 has been submitted to the New Zealand censors and is expected to pass.

Rumour: Aussies may ban Fallout 3

Fallout 3 has been "Refused Classification" by the Australian Office of Film and Literature Classification (OFLC), according to a rumour posted by GamersHell.

Unlike New Zealand and almost every other country in the world, Australia lacks any rating above "M15+" for video games, so titles that might be rated R16 or R18 in NZ can end up being banned in Australia (or censored, like Grand Theft Auto IV).

Apparently the ban may be a result of the game containing use of the drug morphine as a stimulant. So expect it to be R16 or R18 in New Zealand. It has not been rated here yet. Fallout Tactics was the only previous release in the series that required a classification in New Zealand, and it received an R16 sticker.

Fallout 3

It's hard to believe it's been over ten years since Fallout hit the shelves. Although the graphics now appear dated, the storyline still resonates with anyone brave enough to fire up this retro classic. The subtle dark comedy adds to the chilling social commentary on a post-apocalyptic world struggling to preserve the human race, something our species has only really begun to comprehend this year as we saw cheese break through ten dollars a kilo.

Back in the late 1990s, it was Black Isle Studios and Interplay who oversaw the development and production of the Fallout franchise, however despite the runaway success of both Fallout and Fallout 2, Interplay suffered severe financial problems and eventually sold the intellectual property rights to Bethesda Softworks. Bethesda has wasted no time in developing Fallout 3, themselves admitting that they want it to serve as a progression from their primary money spinner The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, so much so that they've retained the Gamebryo game engine and reworked it to include a number of enhancements to cater for the Fallout universe.
