Red Dead Redemption PC rumours won't lie down

New clues have reignited old rumours that Rockstar's open world Western, Red Dead Redemption, may still be coming to PC.

A listing for Red Dead Redemption has been found by a NeoGAF user in a database maintained by Microsoft to help determine compatibility with its operating systems Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.

The FAQ notes that a game can only be listed on the database if it has been submitted by a developer or by Microsoft Testing. Qualifying submissions, like the one for Red Dead Redemption, are published.

New resume adds to Red Dead Redemption sequel rumours

A graphics engineer’s resume is the latest in a growing pile of clues that suggest Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar Games is working on a sequel to Red Dead Redemption.

The Rockstar New England senior graphics engineer’s resume stated that he was working on the “next version of a famous IP” now that Grand Theft Auto V was complete.

The resume was first spotted by Superannuation, who also pointed out that there are two possible candidates in Rockstar’s stable that fit the profile: Bully and Red Dead. The latter has a higher profile.

Jose Gonzalez recently took time out of his busy summer tour schedule to swing by the Rockstar offices in New York and perform this intimate, acoustic rendition of “Far Away”, his contribution to the Red Dead Redemption Soundtrack.

You may remember this song from when John Marston first reaches Mexico, riding horseback along a dusty trail between cascading red cliffs and the San Luis River; definitely one of Red Dead’s most visually and sonically memorable moments.

Rockstar to lynch RDR cheats

Rockstar has stated on its community site that it’s aware of “a few rotten apples” who are hacking and cheating while playing Red Dead Redemption online, and that they’re now “actively working on new features to counter against the isolated incidents of abuse that go on.”

The fixes will come with the next title update to Red Dead Redemption, due in August. Counter hacking and cheat detection measures will be included. Anyone caught doing so will be banned for a period determined at Rockstar’s discretion.

The update will also introduce new anti-griefing mechanics for Free Roam mode. Anyone who is being killed over and again by the same player will be able to respawn at a location of their choosing. Moreover, anyone with a six-kill streak in Free Roam will gain a “Most Wanted” flag. This status informs all other players of the Player Killer’s actions and will also dispatch NPC lawmen to hunt down the target.

Layoffs at Rockstar San Diego

Rockstar San Diego is stripping back its staff after the release of Red Dead Redemption. Quoting “sources close to the developer”, Kotaku reports that as many as 40 staff may be riding into the sunset. The scenario is typical of post-release for a triple-A title.

In response to the news, Rockstar San Diego’s studio manager Steve Martin writes, “As is typical with game development, our team sizes have always fluctuated over the course of the development cycle. As Rockstar San Diego transitions from the launch of Red Dead Redemption onto future projects, we are realigning our resources in order to continue to develop games as effectively as possible.

“We are ensuring that all employees who are affected by these changes are being treated with care. While we have no announcements to make regarding a sequel to Red Dead Redemption, the team here are hard at work on the development of downloadable content for the game.”

Red Dead Redemption: multiplayer 'Free Roam'

Gameplanet's Dan Cheer explains how the 'Free Roam' multiplayer mode in Red Dead Redemption works. Four minutes of gameplay.

Red Dead Redemption just keeps going from strength to strength, doesn't it?

With over five million units shipped worldwide since May 21st, Rockstar's sandbox Western has taken everyone by surprise.

Of all the elements of the game we examined in the lead-up to the release date, the multiplayer was always where we felt Red Dead could suffer. It always seemed overly ambitious of Rockstar to let players loose in the game world with barely any regulation, facing off against others quite likely to be several ranks above you and crazier than a prairie dog with sunstroke.

Red Dead Redemption review

How arbitrary and clumsy it is to assign a score to a game on a point scale. Almost by default many games reporters feel obliged to leave that final point as a never-to-be-played trump card. To use it just once is to open a Pandora’s Box of flaming scepticism that they fear could combust their credibility and leave them out in the cold, sifting through the ashes of their career.

Ten, many privately hold, is a score best left to advertorial magazines, and to flirt with the thought of using it is to invite more hand-wringing than typing.

To truly score a ten, then, a game must surpass mere excellence. It must scale some kind of Olympian summit and boldly gaze upon the divine countenance of whatever deity it is that gamers worship. No kidding.

Red Dead Redemption

Unusually for Rockstar, the pre-release flow of information for Red Dead Redemption has been remarkably candid.

But then it would need to be - Red Dead represents a massive challenge, even for a developer at the peak of their game like this San Diego based studio. With Grand Theft Auto, the premise is well established. You know you'll be driving a fast car and engaging in illicit acts with women of the night, and that there's likely to be carnage on a city-wide scale in your immediate gaming future. Red Dead is such a departure from established titles it's little wonder we've been treated to trailer upon trailer, all involving clear narration and extensive gameplay.

We last previewed this title shortly before Christmas, and quickly discovered the scope of Rockstar's ambition. This time around however, after a short demonstration, we were let loose with the controller and largely left to our own devices to explore the landscape. A landscape, mind, that is staggeringly enormous. It's the largest game world Rockstar have ever created, so those familiar with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will have an understanding of the scale involved. In addition, it's the first overwhelmingly rural world, which naturally presents a problem for the developers in keeping the player engaged with the game.

Red Dead Redemption recreates the American West at the turn of the 20th century: a violent and turbulent time of rapid growth and change.
Red Dead Redemption

As a bleary-eyed John Marston rises to his feet, kicks dirt onto his small campsite fire and surveys the vast auburn plains and mesas of Nuevo Parasio at dawn, Rockstar elaborates on a development mantra: “There are no invisible walls. If you can see it, you can go there – and find something to do.”

I’m in the Sydney offices of Rockstar Games, walking through the latest build of Red Dead Redemption, an ambitious production from the studio behind the equally praiseworthy and controversial Grand Theft Auto series.

An indirect sequel to Wild West shooter Red Dead Revolver, Redemption is set twenty years later in the first decade of the twentieth century. But where Revolver was a Western of the spaghetti stripe, Redemption is post-Western. The gold rushes have dried up, manifest destiny has run its regrettable course and the steady pounding of industrialisation aggravates the hangover.
