In an attempt to compensate for the delay of Rayman Legends on the Wii U, Ubisoft is offering that console’s owners free access to the game’s challenge modes ahead of time and for free.

Rayman Legends’ online challenge mode – a first for the series – will be available on the Wii U at the beginning of April, and will contain a Wii U-exclusive level.

The online challenge modes span five levels – The Pit, Land of the Dead, The Infernal Tower, The Dojo, and Wii U-exclusive Dungeon – and each focuses on a particular gameplay mechanic.

On the Wii U, up to five players may play the challenge levels at once.

Challenge goals will be added daily and weekly, and results will be collated on an online leaderboard.

Ghost runs of top players and friends will also be available in-game.

The Wii U-exclusive Dungeon level requires players to master speed and rhythm on the GamePad’s touchscreen, according to Ubisoft.

The online challenge mode will only be available on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 as part of the full retail game when it launches alongside the Wii U version in September.

The Wii U version of Rayman Legends was slated for a February 22 release, but this month was delayed by Ubisoft to align its launch with that of other platforms, much to the dismay of the game's developers.
