Nintendo announced its new home console at an E3 press event in Los Angeles this morning. Called the Wii U, it is a full HD console featuring a touch screen controller. Watch an excerpt from the press event with our impressions and some footage of the device in action.
yes I see some fun applications for it. I would like to know how much memory this thing has, is it still 512mb system memory and 1gb video memory. I would hope so but something tells me it will get the chop.
Well that was quite a downgrade from the rumours.
360 level power. A resistive touch lcd that can't work outside the same room of the console. No notable 1st party games, just 360/ps3 ports.
Personally I want 360/PS3 "ports", the Wii's shit catalogue is what is holding it back, being able to play the same titles as other gamers is win.
but what's the point if you own either system me and my best bud were just having this conversation they should released this instead of the wii I can potential see most gamers ignoring this system
Probably none if you already own a current gen console, but a lot of people don't want multiple consoles especially if they already have a PC, they'll choose one platform for the lounge and stick with it.
The only question mark i have is over how future proof it will be. I mean 360\Ps3 ports are good, especially those who have missed out this gen, but games like Arkham City and Battlefield 3 are going to be a year old when released, then when Xbox 3\PS4 are released they will likely dwarf Wii U's power and we get back into the exact same situation where it simply isnt possible to port next gen games to it, like we have this gen.
Yeah there is great potential for the touch screen, but will most devs actually use it to any great level, and will it actually be capable of streaming a game like Battlefield 3 for example - given the mock up used was a Mario 2d scroller?
I like the ideas around it and think there are some great things on there, but based on what we have seen so far, not really convinced to be honest. I guess i'll take it for what the presentation was - a more potential and idea than finished product - and they do have a year or so to work on it so hopefully it will be more mind blowing then.
I guess with the 360 and PS3 being around for another 4yrs nintendo hope to capture market share of core gamers, as their console will be just as powerful (probably slightly more so) and has an interesting controller. I mean, for example, what if BF3 on Wii has 4xAA and/or runs at 1080p compared to 720p 0xAA on PS3/360?? Who knows... then in 4/5yrs time Sony and MS release their expensive loss-leader consoles into a society suffering from a double whammy recession and bankrupt themselves - woo!
Well that was quite a downgrade from the rumours.
360 level power...
Where was this confirmed?

This. I have a Wii because it's markedly different from my PC experience. 360 & PS3 don't offer that. Although it doesn't get nearly as much use as the 'puter, I still fire up Tennis or Swordfighting, and it's always a blast when other people are around.
Oh it's not confirmed, but there are a lot of signs:
-Nintendo doesn't seem to be hyping up how much more powerful it is.
-The 2 tech demos they showed weren't outstanding.
-Only mini/2d games were shown as streamable, so the system isn't capable of encoding hd video and rendering 2005-gen games at the same time.
-They've also said they're aiming for a 250usd price point, which with typical nintendo tax probably means it costs 150-200usd to build.
They're still hiding the final specs and cpu/gpu clock rates, so perhaps they'll raise them per developer demand over the next year.
People said the same thing about the Wii. Hardly anything new, haters gon' hate.
This thing exists because the Wii is dying an early death. Part of the reason for that IMO is because the software lineup is so poor, because while the controller of the Wii is novel, the software sucks ass and 3rd party developers in general don't get it, and I would imagine the same will be able to be said about the U, only this time round maybe people will be a bit more skeptical and the hardware sales won't be as monumental as the Wii's to boot.
Now, it could be instead that the sales are so bad because of the ramification of the antiquated hardware, but I'd be surprised if that were the case.
