Gameplanet New Zealand Latest updates from Gameplanet - New Zealand's #1 destination for gamers. Tue, 29 Jul 2014 18:39:17 +1200 Zend_Feed_Writer 1.12.3 (http://framework.zend.com) http://www.gameplanet.co.nz/ contact@gameplanet.co.nz (Gameplanet) Gameplanet Dishonored, Crimson Dragon headline August Games with Gold Microsoft has announced the Games with Gold line-up for August.

Topping the bill on Xbox One is Crimson Dragon.

Gameplanet scored Crimson Dragon 5/10, writing, "Rail shooters are often derided for their simplistic gameplay, but a good rail shooter can still be satisfying. All it takes is clear, punchy gameplay and good controls - but Crimson Dragon has neither. More than anything, the game feels unfinished, features and much-needed polish left by the wayside in favour of meeting the Xbox One’s launch date."

Bungie addresses concerns over the size of Destiny Bungie has sought to reassure fans that Destiny will have plenty of content to play through when it releases on September 9.

Leaked data files indicate that Destiny will contain four areas: Earth, the Moon, Mars, and Venus. Each location will contain a single destination, meaning the Cosmodrome and the Tower are the only Earth locations so far.

In light of that, some players have expressed concern over the total size of Bungie's upcoming shooter. The beta, which appeared to include all the Cosmodrome content, could be completed in a few ponderous hours.

Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty review Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty is an excellent example of how to remake a game. A must for returning fans and newcomers alike.

Let’s go back in time, way back to the days of 1997. That year, 39 members of the Heaven's Gate Cult committed suicide, Princess Diana died, Versace was murdered, Tony Blair was elected, and James Cameron unleashed Titanic on an unsuspecting world. It was a dark time in human history, but there was a bright spot. No, not Dolly the cloned sheep – Abe, the flatulent protagonist of a wee game called Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee.

Abe was the unlikeliest of heroes. Prancing about in a loin cloth, he couldn't fire a gun or fight, and he expired the moment an enemy so much as breathed on him. He also had a weird thing for birds, the vocab of a particularly slow infant, and a flatulence problem. Fortunately, he could run, jump, issue basic commands, possess some creatures, and can fart on command. In a pre-YouTube era, that meant something.

Abe’s Oddysee was a tough game full of well-obscured puzzles, lively enemies, diverse environments, and oddball charm, and it even imparted a decent lesson to players. (POSSESS EVERYTHING AND MURDER EVERYONE.) In short, it has withstood the test of time.

Assassin's Creed Unity will be three times as large as Black Flag Assassin's Creed Unity will be three times larger than than last year's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

Unity is set during the French Revolution and features a single city, Paris. Even so, it will be at least three times larger than the entire combined land mass of Black Flag.

The information comes via a developer interview at San Diego Comic-Con. In the same interview, the developer, introduced only as Nick, and who identifies himself as a level design director, added that the core campaign will take 15-20 hours to complete. Together with side missions, there will be more than 100 hours of content, claimed the developer.

Virtual reality "kind of a step back, it's a fad" – Doom dev Id co-founder and Doom developer John Romero says virtual reality won’t find mainstream acceptance because it’s too antisocial.

Speaking at the Strong Museum of Play (as reported by GamesIndustry), Romero said that he was blown away by the quality of the virtual reality (VR) headsets like the Oculus Rift, but that he didn’t see them catching on.

"VR is going away from the way games are being developed and pushed as they go back into multiplayer and social stuff,” he said.

Crytek addresses reports of financial difficulty Crytek says a strategic shift was responsible for reports of its financial difficulties, and that extra funding has been secured that will see the studio prosper in the long term.

Over the past month there have been several rumours that the Ryse developer was in financial trouble, including a rumour that Ryse 2 had been scrapped, and another that Homefront: The Revolution game director Hasit Zala was one of 100 people that had left the project since March.

“Internally, we have acknowledged that the flow of information to employees has not been as good as it should have, however we hope you understand that communicating details of our plans publicly has not always been possible,” Crytek said in a statement to Games Industry.

The Last of Us Remastered review The Last of Us Remastered is a better-looking, better performing version of an already incredible game. As such, those who haven't played the original version should buy immediately, and those that have probably should as well.

However you feel about rejigged releases surfacing on new-gen hardware, it’s pretty tough to be upset at the existence of The Last of Us Remastered. Sure, The Last of Us was a damned fine game the first go-around, and Remastered will set you back about NZ$75, but it does include all the original game’s DLC including the Left Behind expansion, cutscene commentary from the developers and voice actors, a pretty cool photo mode, and a few smaller extras.

Of course, the biggest marketing bullet point is that Remastered looks much better than the vanilla game. With the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions placed side by side, it’s easy to see the work that’s been put in, and the difference is quite staggering. The Last of Us was hardly an ugly duckling when it launched on PlayStation 3 last year, but it’s been given the full 1080p treatment complete with higher resolution character models, upgraded textures, longer draw distances, and improved lighting and shadows.

The result is gameplay that visually is difficult to distinguish from the cutscenes – it really does look that good. Gone are the jaggies that occasionally cropped up on the PlayStation 3, and the game’s shadow and water effects (particularly the rain) are now simply sensational. The phrase “it’s just like playing a movie!” was uttered several times by others who dropped in on my playthrough – eat your heart out, David Cage.

Meet Hutama, leader of Polystralia in Civilization: Beyond Earth Q: Why this game, now?

David McDonough: The easy answer is that we love science fiction, and the opportunity to do a Civilization-style game set in the future was a rich and enticing challenge. Of course, this isn’t the first time it's been done. Our fans adored Alpha Centauri – we grew up with that game and we love it a lot too – and they’ve been pleading with Firaxis to make another one for coming on 15 years now. We’ve never been able to do it, but at this particular juncture, the timing and all the various circumstances falling into place, we finally had the opportunity to say, ‘Yes, now’s the time,’ so we took it.

Q: Can you speak generally to the role of leaders in Beyond Earth?

Evolve hands-on Evolve excites us for a number of reasons, and not the least because it's a new intellectual property (gasp!) bringing fresh thinking to the blunted multiplayer shooter scene – or at the very outside executing superbly on ripe thinking. Everyone in gaming has been talking about asymmetric multiplayer for a few years now but for whatever reason no one has truly delivered. Evolve looks like it's it, the long-awaited killer app.

The premise is simple: four player-controlled hunters set out to trap and kill one player-controlled monster, but as the game progresses and the monster evolves, the power dynamic shifts. Prey becomes predator. Achieving that shift so subtly is a marvel of gameplay balancing, and the result is water-cooler moments in every round. We played it yesterday over a LAN which, unsurprisingly, is the optimal way to experience Evolve.

In February, we looked at the first four hunters and the Goliath monster, a brutish fire-breathing beast in the tradition of King Kong. Yesterday, we played the Kraken, a monster clearly inspired by deep sea creatures, HP Lovecraft's Cthulu mythology, and at least one designer's repressed misgivings about female anatomy.

Random Access Memories: Renegade Renegade was a true pioneer. The very first 3D beat-‘em-up to hit arcades in the West, it wowed gamers not only with its y-axis movement, but also with enemies that could take more than a single hit before crumpling to the ground. Sometimes they’d even get back up for more, just like real life!

Released into arcades in the US and Europe in 1986, Renegade’s influence was immediate and long-lasting. It moved fighting games away from the tournament settings of 2D titles like The Way of the Exploding Fist and Yie Ar Kung-Fu and into the streets, where players took the role of vigilantes, beating down scumbags and rescuing kidnapped girlfriends.

It was also the catalyst for a 3D brawler explosion that would see the genre prominently feature in arcades for the next half-decade, with most of its descendants adopting its punch/jump/kick button layout, boss-per-level structure, side-scrolling format, and poorly-implemented environmental interactions.

Ratchet & Clank Trilogy review Ratchet & Clank Trilogy is a largely successful port of the much-loved action platformer. Looking on them in 2014, though, the flaws are more apparent, and the a couple of design decisions don't translate to the Vita all that well.

Ratchet & Clank Trilogy is the latest in a long, respectable line of Playstation stalwarts ported to and revamped for the PS Vita, joining God of War, Jak and Daxter, Metal Gear Solid, Flower, and a deep well of PSOne Classics. The steady trickle of old standards back to storefronts is a boon for players looking to revisit old favourites or explore games they missed the first time around (assuming they were even alive – kids born around the time the first Ratchet & Clank was released will be 12 now).

But this steady trickle, this great excavation of recent games history, serves another purpose. It lets us revisit these games with fresh eyes. We can shine a light on the old canon, see if it still holds up. In the case of Ratchet & Clank Trilogy, it's holding up pretty well. But the cracks are showing.

We can still say Ratchet & Clank’s foundations are strong, though. Its faithful adherence to the fundamentals of the modern 3D platformer and mechanics with their roots Super Mario 64 makes it feel similarly timeless, and the weapons system remains diverse and almost ahead of its time (even if Armed and Dangerous was only two years off). But its most interesting feature is still its level design.

The crowdfunding effort was halted by Kickstarter with just two days remaining, and just after clearing its funding goal. No money will be taken from backers.

Kickstarter doesn't disclose why it suspends campaigns, but its terms of use outline a plethora of possible scenarios that can get a project pulled, including misrepresentation and self-pledging – both of which developer West Games has been accused of.
