Sony Computer Entertainment's first-party studios have "no titles in development" for the PS Vita, according to SCE senior VP Masayasu Ito.

In an interview with 4Gamer (translated by DualShockers), Ito revealed that the company is leaving Vita development to third parties.

Sony itself will focus on developing games for the PS4.

Sony confirms the Vita has disappointed

Sony has said the PlayStation Vita handheld has performed below its expectations, and says the high asking price coupled with a limited selection of games is to blame.

Speaking with Famitsu magazine, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan president Haroshi Kawano said, “Certainly, at the present time, maybe we're a little behind the numbers we originally pictured.”

The Vita is estimated to be selling as little as 10 – 15,000 units per week in Japan. Its rival, Nintendo’s 3DS, is selling upwards of 70,000 units per week.

PlayStation Vita: Should you buy it?

The PlayStation Vita has courted as many headlines doubting its viability as it has anticipating its arrival. Can Sony reinvograte the market for dedicated handheld gaming devices, or is the PlayStation Vita too much, too late?

Last week, something rather extraordinary occurred at Sony.

Not only did incoming CEO Kazuo Hirai admit that the electronics behemoth could potentially be in serious financial danger, he all but blamed an attitude of complacency for its latest NZ$2.5 billion quarterly loss.

This surprisingly frank concession is all the more remarkable given that Hirai hails from the PlayStation side of the business, Sony's most successful division, but one that can hardly be lauded as hanging five atop a wave of innovation.

Sony encouraged by 3DS success

In spite of an underwhelming launch in Japan, Sony is buoyed by the success of competing handheld, the Nintendo 3DS.

Speaking with MCV, Sony’s Ryan Nelson said that the success of the Nintendo 3DS proved there was still a market for dedicated handheld gaming devices.

“One of the encouraging things about 3DS's sales performance at Christmas is that it is confounding the naysayers who say that there is no room in the market for a dedicated handheld gaming device,” he said. “And to that extent we were encouraged by how 3DS did over the last month.”

PlayStation Vita tanks in Japan

Sony’s new portable console, the PlayStation Vita, saw a 78 percent drop in sales in its first two weeks at retail in Japan.

According to researcher Media Create, The PlayStation Vita went from 324,859 sales in its first week to only 72,479 in its second, ceding the top-selling position to the Nintendo 3DS (482,200) and second place to the older PlayStation Portable (101,121).

Speculation suggests that the Vita’s steep recommended retail price (JPY 24,000; NZD 400) and the lack of a launch title from the extremely popular Monster Hunter series could both be having a significant impact on current sales. Some now anticipate a price cut ahead of the portable console’s Western release in February.

PS Vita makes strong if unspectacular launch in Japan – reports

Early and unconfirmed reports from Japan suggest that Sony’s new handheld console, the PlayStation Vita, has performed well at release but has perhaps come up short of the success Sony may have hoped for.

The PlayStation Vita has not sold out according to Japanese retailers, and consumers are able to pick up a unit without having pre-ordered.

Several unconfirmed reports put the sell-through at 85 per cent for the WiFi model and 56 per cent for the 3G model.
