The Saboteur PS3

Review

The Saboteur had potential, but is let down by a weak combat mechanic and some terrible stealth/AI issues. Perhaps a few more months of development would have seen a much better title, but unfortunately time wasn't on Pandemics side with this one.

GP: Saboteur is based on the real life actions of William Grover-Williams, a racing driver who assisted the French Resistance during World War 2. Was the design of Saboteur built around this character from the outset, or did you come up with the concept of a WW2 sabotage theme, and then decide to place this historical figure in it?

The Saboteur gets release date

Today Pandemic Studios announced that its open-world sandbox action game The Saboteur will be available worldwide on December 8, 2009.

The Saboteur has recently won various art awards, including Best of E3 2009 for Artistic Design for Xbox 360 by IGN.com.

Inspired by a true story, The Saboteur stars Sean Devlin, a street-tough Irish race car driver trapped behind enemy lines in 1940s Nazi-occupied France. Motivated by personal revenge, Sean fights, climbs, and races through open-world Paris, sneaking into the heart of the Nazi operations and sabotaging their every move.

The Saboteur

One of the most interesting and character filled games I've seen around E3 so far has to be The Saboteur.

The game set in Nazi-occupied Paris offers gamers a real treat, a sandbox environment in which to cause havoc. According to lead designer Tom French (could he have a more appropriate name?), the team developing the game went at it with a 'quiet in, loud out' ethos. This mechanic allows players to satisfy two inherently different play styles, stealth sneakery and the all-guns-blazing approach. Sneak up and break an enemies' neck, steal his uniform and infiltrate? Or use a rocket-launcher to demolish a blimp? It's up to you.

The character of this revenge twinged storyline is an Irishman named Shaun, who's out to knock off some pesky Nazis in his own, ever-so-cool manner. After all, he is a race car driver when he's not busy with the ladies of the Red Light District. A 1940's rockstar approach has been taken with Shaun's character, which is reflected in the cover system used in the game. Shaun glides and ducks smoothly next to walls and behind crates, French was careful to outline his intention to make Shaun seem cool under fire, rather than a flailing slapstick joke. Completed a big mission? Shaun effortlessly flicks his zippo across a cigarette, leaving a cloud for anyone in his trail. Very swish.

E3 Day 0: A kiwi gamer's impressions
Project Natal

Probably the most memorable thing from today’s Microsoft press conference was the reveal of the Natal, the motion sensitive device that Microsoft has been working on. Lionhead’s Peter Molyneux said it will revolutionise the gaming industry, and it has the backing of Hollywood director Steven Spielberg.

While it’s true that Molyneux has a bit of a reputation for talking things up before they’ve reached gamers’ hands, if Natal really works as Microsoft showed doing, it could be pretty impressive by the time it's unleashed upon the world.

During today’s demo of Natal, a woman on stage knocked down blocks and kicked back balls, stacked up against a wall, all by jumping up and down, and waving her head, arms and legs around. In another demo, a man used a virtual painting program, where he gestured as if he was throwing paint on a canvas, to make an African scene complete with baby elephant (created through the use of two people and a couple of pillows).
