There was an article I remember reading before GT5 was even released that claimed that GT5 would be profitable from day 1 because the huge development costs were covered from the sales of Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Prologue alone sold in excess of 4 million copies.

EDIT: 5.09 million copies according to wikipedia.

IIRC the development budget was increased because of the success of Prologue, so the 60million quoted in the link above was actually increased to $80million.

$80 million? Surely with that kind of money they could have done a better job with the car sounds? The sound in that game is average at best. Turbo and V8 cars sound nothing like the real thing.
