Bayonetta PS3

Review

Bayonetta is a refreshing and somewhat surprising addition to an already extensive catalogue of action games. A must-buy for any anime gaming fan, and an excellent representation of the genre.

Bayonetta gets US and EU release dates

Sega today announced release dates for its third-person action title, Bayonetta. Due on US shelves on the 5th of January and three days later in Europe, the title was originally pushed into the 2010 calendar year so that it would not have to compete with established Intellectual Properties over the holiday season.

The game features Devil May Cry producer Hikedi Kamiya’s trademark over-the-top stylised violence as players take control of the titular character - a reborn witch who battles her way through a fictional European city dispatching angels with everything from heel guns to her hair.

3.28pm update: we have heard from Sega NZ that the game will be released in New Zealand and Australia on January 7th 2010.

It's been accused of being Devil May Cry in heels, but from the looks of things, Bayonetta is shaping up to be a compelling action title in its own right.

Under development for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 by Platinum Games in cooperation with SEGA, Bayonetta is due for release this year. We tracked it down at E3 and recorded some in-game footage.

    • Torture Attacks - Unleash gruesome devices such as the Iron Maiden, Guillotine and more to finish off enemies and send them to hell by charging your Magic gauge.
    • Climax attacks -To eliminate the upper ranks of her foes, Bayonetta’s hair serves as a magical conduit to summon demonic beasts.
  • Interchangeable weapons
    • Upgradeable weapons -In addition to her four enchanted guns called Scarborough Fair, she can unlock an array of weapons from shotguns, bazookas and fiery claws
    • Enemy weapons - Bayonetta can also battle with a variety of other weapons retrieved from fallen enemies
