Destiny beta participants cannot keep their characters because the game will be too different come launch day, says Bungie.

In an update on the game’s official site, Bungie designer Tyson Green elaborated as to why all characters created in the game’s recent beta had to be wiped.

“Since the Beta, we’ve continued to tune and adjust the game,” he said.

“The way you earn experience has been adjusted up and down a bunch of times. Items have been added and removed. New features toggled.

“Although there’s no single monumental change, the sum of the tweaks leaves characters from the Beta Build in strange shape that would be confusing at best, broken at worst.”

Destiny's beta concluded at the tail end of last month, with 4.6 million players participating across PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.

According to Activision, it was the largest open beta test in console game history.

Destiny launches on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 on September 9.
