More than 4 million people participated in the Destiny beta, making it the biggest ever for a new intellectual property, Activision has announced.

The beta, which began first on PlayStation consoles on July 18 and finished on all consoles July 28, was played by 4,638,937 unique players.

"This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date,” said Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg. "Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see the phenomenal response."

"We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta,” said Bungie COO Pete Parsons. "We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable."

Destiny comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 9.
