Ratchet & Clank review

The Lombax and his trusty robotic companion make their PlayStation 4 debut in style with an entertaining story, great gameplay, and a beautiful galaxy to explore. This is one of the PlayStation 4’s best exclusives by a mile.

Ratchet & Clank is a love letter addressed to my 10-year-old self, as I spent too many hours adventuring, too many hours shooting, and way too many hours collecting bolts all the way back in the early 2000s. Insomniac’s reintroduction of the well-loved duo is the culmination of 14 years of refinement and love, and makes for one of the PlayStation 4’s best exclusives by a good mile.

Those who have previously adventured through Ratchet & Clank’s original 2002 runout will find that jumping into this year’s game feels instantly nostalgic. Everything’s quite fresh and new, but the game’s beautifully recreated areas and galaxy-spanning story generally follows the same line of that from the original. That’s not a bad thing, though, as going back to the series’ roots has allowed Insomniac to incorporate a lot of the best parts from previous entries in the series into this one, and it makes the experience feel extremely polished, flowing with great ideas and fun gameplay mechanics.

The Game, Based on the Movie, Based on the Game… no, seriously, it is! The film and game are designed as complementary pieces. They tell the same origin story of Ratchet & Clank battling Chairman Drek, with the same major beats and character arcs. The film focuses a touch more on character development and the game is a bit more focused on the action that happens between the scenes. Check out the Story Trailer for a brief look!

Ratchet & Clank hands-on

Ratchet & Clank is a game based on a film that’s based on a game, but it’s also a re-imagining of the game that the film is based on. Got it? Delayed to coincide with said film’s release (and also so a little more polish could be applied), Ratchet & Clank 2016 game not film won’t revolutionise the shooter-platformer genre, but it also seems unlikely to disappoint the series’ many fans. Not bad for a game from a franchise that’s almost old enough to drive.

If that sounds like faint praise, it isn’t intended as such. With eight core titles and five spin-offs released in just over a decade, the R&C franchise is one of the most successful in video game history. It’s so consistently good, you can pick up and play almost any of its entries to immediately understand its draw. Spyro creator Insomniac Games hit upon a winning formula at the series’ outset, mixing up responsive gap-jumping and satisfying foe bashing with oodles of character, charming graphics, and the most creative weapons in all of video gaming (sorry, Saints Row). Like Pixar’s movies, the R&C franchise is aimed at kids and young teens, but there’s plenty in there for adults, too.
