Q: Broadly speaking, what's new in season two?

Doug Heder: Last year when we launched Lego Dimensions, we were committed to the idea that it would be a platform – a system that would continue to grow and expand and not need to be replaced by new boxed product every year. So we stayed true to that promise – we're not gonna replace that hardware. We're just gonna keep continue to release new waves of toys and content that will continue to grow out the Lego Dimensions experience. Last year we gave you 15+ levels all on disc in the box that could be played through with just your starter pack characters, and then you could unlock additional adventure worlds and even in some cases additional standalone levels through the expansion packs.

Lego has addressed a common complaint about Lego Dimensions in a new update to the game.

The complaint - that large areas of the game are blocked off until players (or their parents) purchase expensive character packs - is supposedly addressed via the game's new Hire A Hero feature.

Hire A Hero allows players to temporarily unlock non-owned characters using studs, the game's in-game currency.

[i]Lego Dimensions[/i] gets its crazy pop culture mash-up right, and adds some interesting real-world mechanics to the toys-to-life genre. The financial barrier to entry is high, but it's not bad value by any stretch. Recommended.

In its first toys-to-game release, TT Games has given us Dimensions – an eclectic mix of the classic Lego-style games we have come to know over the years and, well, everything else you can think of.

The introductory cinematic takes us into a world somewhere in between the barren surface of a yet-to-be-discovered planet and a Lego desert at night. It’s nearly completely devoid of life, and interspersed with undulating waves of white Lego bricks capable of producing random items ranging from neurons to jumbo-jets from it’s crest.

Fox has re-recorded some of Marty McFly’s Back to the Future dialogue for the game alongside Christopher Lloyd, who played Doc Brown in the popular film series.

DC comics. Jurassic Park. The Simpsons. Doctor Who. Back to the Future. Lord of the Rings. Ghostbusters. Scooby Doo. The Wizard of Oz. That’s an insane (and incomplete) line-up of intellectual properties that will feature in TT Games’ upcoming toys-to-game offering Lego Dimensions, and an obvious selling point that distinguishes the game even from IP-heavy Disney Infinity. How on earth did TT Games manage to nab such an array of iconic licenses for what’s essentially a mash-up?

“When it comes to any Lego title, we get a lot of leeway [from each IP owner] because of the way we develop these games,” reckons Lego Dimensions associate producer Mark Warburton. “We always do it with such authenticity and love and care and reverence. We’re all huge geeks so we love these IPs. We’re cheeky, we like to have a bit of fun, we like to have a sense of humour, but we care about this. We really wanna make something very special. We want the fans to be impressed.”

Those IPs aren’t just expansion packs either – the game's Starter Pack allows you to play through levels from every licence the team has announced so far, including curios like Midway.

Warner Bros. has detailed more of its Lego Dimensions post-launch content, which will include packs from DC Comics, Back to the Future, and Lego Ninjago.

The Back to the Future Fun Pack will feature a Lego Doc Brown minifigure and the steam train from Back to the Future Part III (the DeLorean is already included with the Back to the Future Level Pack, which also comes with Marty McFly and his hoverboard).

There will also be a DC Comics Team Pack that features Lego Joker and Lego Harley Quinn minifigures, and three additional DC Comics Fun Packs will add Lego Superman, Lego Aquaman, and Lego Bane minifigures to the mix.

A new Lego game is looking to compete with Skylanders, Disney Infinity, and Nintendo's Amiibo figurines by merging physical Lego bricks with console gameplay.

Lego Dimensions is a collaboration between publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, developer TT Games, and The Lego Group, and has players place “minifigure heroes” on a Lego Toy Pad to transport them into the virtual world.

It will see a release on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Wii U on September 28, and fuse together many fan-favourite universes including DC Comics, The Lord of the Rings, The Lego Movie, The Wizard of Oz, Lego Ninjago, and Back to the Future.
