Polyphony CEO Kazunori Yamauchi has demonstrated the latest build of Gran Turismo 5 at GamesCom in Cologne, Germany, and revealed that the game will include A-Spec and B-Spec modes, a track creation tool and a kart racing mode.
A-Spec mode Gran Turismo as a genuine driving simulator – the kind that knows that the Nurburging track is uneven and that if you punch it, you’ll come off – Kazunori described B-Spec as a “racing simulation RPG.”
In it, the player develops racers and gives them commands throughout a race. Drivers “level up” and their personalities evolve, it’s the player’s job to manage them.
B-Spec was included in Gran Turismo 4, and the CEO confessed it didn’t work out as Polyphony would have liked before assuring GamesCom attendees that in Gran Turismo 5, B-Spec has received the same developmental “volume” as A-Spec.
Kazunori’s next announcement was the course maker, which is in fact a course generator. Players begin by choosing a location, a time of day, the weather, and whether the track is a circuit or a linear race. Players are able to choose the width of the track, the number and degree of corners. After that, the track will auto-generate and you can test it, before making adjustments to the above.
Something that Kazunori said Polyphony was “saving for GT6” but decided to include now is a kart racing mode.
Gran Turismo 5 is exclusive to PlayStation 3. It’s dated for November 2nd and 3rd in the US and UK respectively.
