Destiny beta now open to almost everyone

Got FOMO over the Destiny beta? Well prepare to get un-FOMO’d, as it is now open to (almost) everybody.

There is one catch – you’ll need Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus. Oh, and a console.

It looks like the beta is being opened up to stress test the servers.

“Our work is not done. There is more we can learn. To make this happen, we need more Guardians to play. This is, above all else, a test,” said Bungie.

“Look for offers to download the beta directly from your console."

Sony settles PSN outage class-action, but denys wrongdoing

Sony has agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit that stems from the weeks-long outage of PlayStation Network in 2011, but it continues to deny that the data of its users was vulnerable.

"A proposed settlement has been reached in the class action lawsuits arising from the April 2011 criminal cyber-attacks on the PlayStation Network, Qriocity, and Sony Online Entertainment services," a Sony representative told Polygon.

"Information regarding the proposed settlement, which is subject to final approval by the Court, is available in the settlement agreement and other documents filed with the Court.

Dragon Age: Inquisition release delayed six weeks

The release of Dragon Age: Inquisition has been delayed six weeks in order to give it an extra layer of polish, EA has announced.

Inquisition was due out on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Windows PC on October 9, but will now hit on November 21.

“We appreciate the enormous support we’ve received from all of you to get to this point, and while this extra few weeks may not seem like a lot, I know the game you’ll play will be all the better for it,” said executive producer Mark Darrah.

Not considering a The Last of Us sequel is "a disservice" to fans – Naughty Dog

Not considering a The Last of Us sequel is "a disservice" to fans – Naughty Dog

If Naughty Dog didn’t consider a sequel to The Last of Us, it “would be a disservice” to the studio and the game’s fans, says community strategist Arne Meyer.

Speaking with Videogamer, Meyer mulled over the possibility of another game set in The Last of Us’ universe.

“I think we always make a smart decision in that all of our games are self-contained stories so they don’t have to continue if we don’t want them to or if there’s no reason for them to continue,” he said.

Destiny will run at 1080p on Xbox One

Bungie's much anticipated shared-world shooter Destiny will run at 1080p on Xbox One when it releases in September.

However, the game's beta will not run at 1080p, claims fansite Destiny Blog, reporting on an IGN Live segment.

Running Destiny at 1080p on Xbox One has only been made possible after Microsoft released a new software development kit (SDK) that freed up 10 percent more GPU power that was previously reserved for Kinect.

Battlefield Hardline delayed to 2015

Battlefield Hardline delayed to 2015

The release of Battlefield Hardline has been pushed to 2015 so the game may be improved and expanded, DICE has announced.

Feedback from the game’s beta got DICE thinking about what else it could put in the game, said studio VP Karl Magnus Troedsson.

“The more we thought about these ideas, the more we knew we had to get them into the game you will all be playing,” he said.

“However, there was only one problem. We would need more time. Time that we didn’t have if we decided to move forward with launching in just a couple of months.

“We decided that the right thing to do was to take more time to ensure Hardline is the best, most innovative Battlefield experience we can give to you, our fans.”

The Evil Within is now coming out earlier than expected

Bethesda will release Shinji Mikami's new survival horror game The Evil Within a week earlier than was previously announced.

Speaking at QuakeCon, Bethesda PR and marketing boss Pete Hines said The Evil Within will now be released on October 16 in New Zealand. It had previously been confirmed for October 21.

The change in date will mean The Evil Within is no longer being released on the same day as 2K's Evolve, which is on a hot streak after picking up numerous accolades at E3.

Bungie reveals extensive Destiny beta content

The Destiny beta kicks off on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 this weekend. Ahead of the launch, Bungie has gone into some detail as to what players can expect.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Bungie community manager David Dague said those who participated in the alpha will also discover new content.

"In many ways it is the beginning of your Destiny adventure," said Dague. "It has more of the story to experience. We've got more of the Crucible to experience. And obviously there is the exploration of Old Russia."

Every Destiny beta key yields three download codes

Gamers who have pre-ordered Bungie's upcoming shared world shooter Destiny have also been granted access to the beta.

It appears that Bungie has been keeping a pleasant secret: each beta key yields not one but three download keys, meaning players can invite two friends to join them. As Bungie notes, this means you'll have "enough to field a full Fireteam on the console of your choosing!"

The codes will then be emailed to players when the beta goes live.

Destiny beta is a real beta, not a demo, stresses Bungie

Just ahead of the Destiny beta this week, Bungie has reminded players that it is a test, to expect problems and how to report them.

"The Destiny beta is a test. Make no mistake. This isn’t some circus stunt. This is science – and you’re the lab rat," Bungie said on its official blog.

"We’d love to tell you that everything will go according to plan, but that wouldn’t be any fun. That wouldn’t teach us a thing. Even if the beta is working perfectly, one of the alpha-geeks in the operations center is gonna kick it to see if it still works. Fortunately, we’ll be going to great lengths to keep you informed and keep you in the game."

Alien: Isolation DLC not just for pre-orders

Alien: Isolation's downloadable content missions based on the original 1979 movie have captured the gaming public's attention and renewed the debate around pre-order incentives.

Yesterday, publisher Sega announced that gamers who pre-order Alien: Isolation will receive two bonus missions based on the 1979 Alien movie. Excitement around the announcement soon gave way to discussion around the dubious practice of ransoming content to drive up pre-orders.

Today, Sega has announced that the DLC is not for pre-order customers only, but will become available to all at a later date.

Former Panama dictator Manuel Noriega sues over his portrayal in Call of Duty

Former Panama dictator Manuel Noriega sues over his portrayal in Call of Duty

Manuel Noriega, the former military dictator of Panama, is suing Activision for using his name and likeness in Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

Noriega features in the Suffer With Me level of Black Ops 2. In it, Alex Mason and Frank Woods track and capture Noriega in outer Panama City.

Noriega, 80, was the military dictator of Panama from December 1983 to December 1989, when he was captured by invading US forces and removed to America as a prisoner of war. In the US, he was tried on eight counts drug trafficking, racketeering, and money laundering. Following his sentence in the US, he was extradited to France where he served a further seven years on money laundering charges. He is now serving another 20 years in a Panama jail.

The lawsuit, filed in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, contends that, "In an effort to increase the popularity and revenue generated by Black Ops 2, defendants used, without authorization or consent, the image and likeness of plaintiff in Black Ops 2.

"Defendants’ use of plaintiff’s image and likeness caused damage to plaintiff. Plaintiff was portrayed as an antagonist and portrayed as the culprit of numerous fictional heinous crimes, creating the false impression that defendants are authorized to use plaintiff’s image and likeness. This caused plaintiffs to receive profits they would not have otherwise received."
