Destiny reviews may have seen Bungie miss US$2.5m quality bonus

The warm but not volcanic reception Destiny has received might mean that Bungie misses out on a cool US$2.5m “quality bonus”.

A clause in a 2010 contract between Activision and Bungie – which was made public thanks to the legal battle between Activision and Vince Zampella and Jason West – states:

“Activision shall pay to Licensor a quality bonus (the "Quality Bonus") in the amount of Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Dollars ($2,500,000) should Destiny Game #1 achieve a rating of at least 90 as determined by gamerankings.com (or equivalent reputable services if gamerankings.com is no longer in sen/ice) as of thirty (30) days following the commercial release of Destiny Game #1 on Xbox 360.”

With the game currently sitting at 76 percent on GameRankings, it seems unlikely this target will be met, although it’s worth noting that the contract may have been overhauled in the years since 2010.

In her 8/10 review, Gameplanet's Siobhan Keogh called Destiny "Far from perfect, but pretty good".

Trade Offers removed from FIFA 15's Ultimate Team mode

Trade Offers will not be an option in FIFA 15’s Ultimate Team mode, as EA continues to wage war on cheaters in the best-selling football franchise.

In prior versions of the game, Trade Offers allowed users to exchange items directly rather than rely on the game's auction mechanism.

Trade Offers were in the game so players could barter or share items with friends, but the system quickly became the domain of coin sellers.

Moving from Halo to Destiny was liberating, says Bungie

Bungie won't soon forget its accomplishments with Halo, but says that working on Destiny has been "liberating" for everyone at the studio.

Speaking with USA Today, Bungie community manager David “Deej” Dague said, "We’ll never turn a blind eye to the accomplishments that come with Halo at Bungie, but as creators, as artists, as people with imaginations for how games can be new and different, and exciting, it was pretty liberating, actually, to start with a blank canvas and say, ‘What sort of story do we want to tell now?’"

Dague added that the move away from Halo was especially popular with staff who had "had kept their imaginations rooted" in that universe.

Bungie details five Destiny events coming this month

Bungie has outlined five Destiny in-game events coming in September and October.

The first is a weekend Crucible Playlist called Salvage, which starts tonight. In it, Two teams of three Guardians will compete to claim relics on small to medium-sized maps.

On September 16, the Vault of Glass will open. It is a new raid that will offer both Raid Set Gear and Ascendant Materials as rewards.

"No one knows what lies within the Vault of Glass, only that beyond its gates you will face your greatest challenge yet."

Bungie only named the remaining three events. The colour coding on Combined Arms and Iron Banner indicate that they will be weekend Crucible playlists. The description for Queen's Wrath, "Obey her orders, settle old scores", suggests that it may be a PvE event.

Destiny has made its colossal budget back

Activision reportedly spent US$500m getting Destiny on to shelves, but the game has already made that back.

The publisher announced that more than US$500m worth of Bungie’s sci-fi shooter has been sold-in to retailers and first-parties (Microsoft and Sony).

However, it didn’t mention how many copies this figure represents.
