PS3 and PS4 will play together in DC Universe Online

Those who buy a PlayStation 4 will be able to play DC Universe Online with those still on PlayStation 3, says Sony.

Answering fan questions on the PlayStation Blog, the game’s senior creative director Jens Andersen said that the two platforms would share servers.

“I’m thrilled to be able to say ‘Yes!’ to this one,” he said.

Sony CEO John Smedley has announced that profits from DC Universe Online are up 700 per cent following the Superhero MMO’s switch to a freemium model.

47 per cent of the profits come from PC users, and 53 per cent come from PlayStation 3 users. The most popular purchases were additional character slots and Vanguard of the Heavens character skins, says Smedely.

Additionally, the playerbase is growing by 6 per cent every day, and more than 85 per cent of logins are returning players.

DC Universe Online goes free-to-play

Sony Online Entertainment has announced that players can now download and play its massively multiplayer online action game DC Universe Online for free.

As of today, all new PC and PS3 players will have access to the base game content in DC Universe Online, including Gotham City, Metropolis, and all current raids and alerts outside of DLC packs.

There are now three access levels in DC Universe Online: Free, Premium and Legendary. All three levels will provide access to the game and include all game updates and fixes to the game, with each level offering differing game options and features. DLC content and features will also be included for Legendary players, and can be purchased by Free and Premium players.

It doesn’t take seven years of tertiary education to understand the appeal behind superheroes. We’ve all daydreamed of commanding an extraordinary ability whether it be invisibility, teleportation, control of the elements or flight. My own childhood superpower was the ability to self-destruct – something that, in the years since 2001, friends have been quick to point out is neither heroic nor limited to the imagination of Stan Lee. My version didn’t even include 75 virgins.

Enter DC Universe Online: A purpose-built conduit to indulge your childhood fantasies or herodom or villainy. Racing through the sinister streets of Gotham under a dark sky ablaze with the Bat signal or exploring the considerably brighter Metropolis is both a joy and a triumph of art direction.

It’s a beautiful world, but also a world in turmoil. The game begins with an introduction video that could easily be watched alongside Saturday morning cartoons. Herein you’ll witness a battle between the forces of good and evil, and the eventual triumph of Lex Luthor and his villains. Yet even as they gloat it becomes apparent that Brainiac has been planning to take sole dominion of the world and in the wake of this battle his plans are laid bare.

To placate the masses, they've also released this combat trailer and new details regarding the beta program. You can register for either the PC or the PlayStation 3 version.
