Guitar Hero, Band Hero, and DJ Hero DLC being taken offline next month

All DLC for Guitar Hero, DJ Hero, and Band Hero will be taken offline at the end of this month, Activision has announced.

However, Guitar Hero’s servers will remain up, and of course any downloadable content already purchased by players is unaffected by this change.

"We want to thank all of you for supporting Guitar Hero over the last nine years," Activision wrote on the official Guitar Hero Facebook page.

Warriors of Rock underperforms at retail

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock sold only 86,000 units in the US in its first week according to analysts Cowen & Company.

The figures indicate a dramatic decline in sales for the series. The previous instalment released last year, Guitar Hero 5, sold 499,000 copies in the US its first week. 2008’s Guitar Hero: World Tour topped 500,000 in its first week. 2007’s Guitar Hero III sold more than 1.4 million units in its first week.

The opinion of many analysts and specialist media commentators has been that the rhythm genre has peaked. These figures may corroborate that sentiment.

Not that long ago, we wrote an article that stirred a debate around gaming franchises that need to retire.

Several local game distributors were less than impressed. Activision, in particular, really didn't appreciate our comment that "...the quiet release of Guitar Hero: Van Halen this year is evidence that the bottom of the barrel has indeed been scraped, and that gamers have probably had enough of music peripheral games for at least another decade."

There's a solid reason why we wrote that article, and in many ways our opinion hasn't changed. The Guitar Hero franchise has been rudderless since Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. Credit where it's due; developers Neversoft are aware of the rather stale nature of the genre, and have clearly designed their latest iteration - Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock - to pick up where Legends of Rock left off. It's not just the similarity in the title of the game that gives it away either.

Activision have released a new trailer for Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock featuring the legendary rockers Megadeth. The game features an all-new, story-driven Quest Mode, a completely redesigned rock-inspired guitar controller and the biggest on-disc selection of rock music ever in a Guitar Hero.

Activision revealed today the entire Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock on-disc lineup.

Warriors of Rock is the latest Guitar Hero title, currently set for release on October 1 in New Zealand. Developers Neversoft have promised the franchise's first ever story-based mode, along with Party Play and a redesigned controller.

Rock fans will be pleased to see the inclusion of Queen, Megadeth, Metallica and Ozzy, although unfortunately Nickleback does make an appearance.

Rock legends Alice Cooper and The Runaways went back into the studio to re-record “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and “Cherry Bomb,” respectively, for fans play when Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is released in September.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, is set to arrive in October. The tracklist will be the biggest yet, with over 90 songs from bands such as Black Sabbath, Slipknot and Megadeth and larger-than-life band anthems from Queen, Muse and KISS.
