Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror review

Lately we’ve seen titles being ported from the PS2 to PSP, however the tide has changed as we now see Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror make its way onto the PS2. Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror enjoyed much success on the PSP, but will this success be shared or is the release on PS2 just another way of cashing in?

Unfortunately it will be difficult to tell as we can’t do a PSP vs PS2 comparison as I have not played the PSP version. Besides if this is the first time then that takes out the whole cash cow scenario. So with this said we look purely at the game as it stands on PS2 and what this game has to offer.

The Syphon Filter series has been going on for some time now and is based around a government agent known as Gabe Logan who specialises in missions deemed to be top secret and poses a threat to all of mankind. Dark Mirror is no different and again follows the “All hell will break loose if they use it” scenario. The threat this time comes from a terrorist group known as the Red Section. The group have managed to obtain a top secret weapon and plan to unleash its devastation on man. Gabe and his team of operatives must now track them down and stop the threat the group poses.

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror

A new threat to global security is near and an agency is tasked with eliminating this threat in project Dark Mirror. Join Gabe Logan, a commander of the agency, as he dives into the field to find out more and take down those responsible.

Dark Mirror is another addition to the Syphon Filter series on PS2 and is due for release later this year. However we thought we would give you a heads up on what’s on offer as we have been fortunate enough to get our hands on a preview copy.

Originally released to PSP, Dark Mirror gets ported the other way and onto the PS2 console. Having not played the PSP version it’s difficult to compare the differences, but not too much has been compromised.

Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror review

The Syphon Filter series of games go way back to 1999. There have been several releases since the original Syphon Filter leading up to the latest release for PSP, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror. Syphon Filter is one of those games with a chequered history so Sony will be looking to put things right with this release for the PSP.

And just like the previous games, you get to play, once again, as Gabe Logan, the gadget king of Spy’s that even 007 would envy. Joining you in this adventure is your trusty side-kick from previous games, Lian Xing. Starting off in the cold, bleak terrain of Alaska, you're on a mission to infiltrate an oil refinery. The oil refinery is about to be blown to smithereens and you’ve been given the task to stop the refinery from being destroyed.

We have to say it; Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror looks awesome on the PSP. Given the fact that the past few games haven’t really delivered to expectation, it’s good to see the next game in the Syphon Filter series pack a punch. Smooth and detailed animation can make all the difference. And the best thing about it is that you can now take the game anywhere. The cut scenes are also a nice addition to this game. The voice acting is top-notch and the dialogue doesn’t seem scripted or cheesy.
